I just threw away a Century charger away...it smoked and died. I didn't feel it was doing the job anyway...so now am looking for a decent charger and would like some expert advice.

Don't need industrial quality, just for home use and hobby use with restoring garden tractors.

Thanks

Rick

Just to say thanks once again for all the helpful advice...I did exactly what "ltf in nc" said...retreived the charger and took the cover off...watched the rectifier smoke...Went to Century website and found a local repair site...called them and they will repair it...for free....Century has a 5 year warranty on retifiers and other parts....Thanks so much for everyone's help...especially "ltf"...this is exactly what forums like these are for....to help, inform and offer tricks and shortcuts learned from personal experience.

Thanks again ,

Rick

The Only disadvantage I see with a fully automatic charger is, if the battery is totally dead, the charger will not charge it. When this occurs, I have to put a normal (manual) charger on the battery until it gets enough juice in it for the automatic charger to work. Why is this, well, some chargers have polarity testers built in, and they will not allow the charger to charge unless the charger knows its hooked up correctly. It requires some sort of juice in the battery so it can check the polarity.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Luckily, I can retreive the Century, so I will look at it and see if that may be the problem.

Thanks again for all the help.

Rick

I worked in a warehouse many years ago which sold among other things battery chargers. The brand I never saw returned was Schauer. I bought one from the warehouse and and have never had a problem. I have had it for over fifteen years now! Neal

i've got a couple of centurys, one that is automatic, also a couple of the big schumakers. no trouble with any of them. I like the automatic because you can set and forget them. about every two months i start at one end of the shed and charge every battery with the automatic charger. i feel this is a good way to keep all the batteries in good shape without fear of overcharging.

Rick, go immediately and retrieve the charger from the scrap pile. These are good chargers but have a selenium rectifier that is a POS. Get from an old electric lift truck a heavy silicon rectifier and replace the old rectifier that came in the charger. It will charge like a million dollars and last forever.

Bought the cheapest KMart special with a name something like Schmach. Used it probably 50 times over the past 2 or 3 years. It charges slowly, but, el cheapo hasn't failed yet. For what you are using it for, you might get by with the absolute minimum.

That's strange. I've had two Centurys for many years, one for the garage, one for the barn. They have been flawless.

Dean , You may have had good luck with Centry battery chargers , but it doesn't sound like Rick has. Another Centry item people don't knock doors down to buy are the welding machines.

Well actually they do. Century is one of the largest manufacturers of welding machines. Somebody is buying them!

Al, if you want to start a fight jump over to one of the tractor boards and ask how to charge a 8 volt battery? Run quickly after you toss this stone as there will be a lot of flak!

I've had a Schumacher 40 amp charge, 200 amp boost for many years. It came from K-mart and cost about $110. It is a wheel type and has never given me any trouble.

I bought a industrial one. The kind that rolls around on wheels. You know what I mean. It's been a very good charger , and I like it. But , I would never buy another one. I would buy one with a handle on top , so that I can just carry it around/stick it up on a shelf , in cuboard , under the hood of truck , car , etc.. It would be a 6V/12V for charging deep cell batteries. Get a 2 amp/10 amp. And make sure it is atomatic. Automatic/manual is OK. Don't get just manual. The brite side to all this is that it is also cheeper than the industrial one , But much more convienient. I'm not fond of Centry. But I,ve looked at many others.Schumaker(not shure of spelling)is a good one. That's what I think I would buy. Sears also had nice looking chargers.
