The application I was thinking about is similar to the B&S vertical engine with a 2 stage pump. Thanks to everyone for the quick replies!!!

Vern from MI. is right as long as it is not a piston pump with a case drain then you are okay. A flooded inlet is very good too. See ya.

Piston pumps have a case drain that is situated on top so they are position sensitive. The piston shoes must be lubricated where they slide on the swash plate so the case must be filled with oil. Gear and vane pumps can be mounted in any direction.

The pump in my father in law's skidloader says yes.

I think they will only pump when laid down on a certain side.

Why not?
I doubt the pump would care.

Sure will.

We used to manufacture a power unit mounted vertically in a bucket like container powered either by a electric motor or a vertical shaft B&S engine. We used a 2 stage Barnes hydraulic pump similar to what a wood splitter uses.
