I am closing off part of our old dairy barn to use as a wood shop. Currently anything we put out there rusts overnight. I want to run a dehumidifier in the shop (or two) to prevent my tools from rusting. Once closed up, it will be fairly air tight.

I believe the unvapor barriered cement floor is the culprit, but I think I can get it under control with a dehumidifier.

Question: How do I best test the humidity and what level does it need to be at before I move my tools in?

Had the same problem in my pole barn. Built a room in the corner 12x22x8 with sliding door large enough to get equipment in and out. Insulated the walls and ceiling, painted everything white, commercial floor tiles, then put in a package terminal air conditioner with heat pump. Maintains any temperature I set it for with little effort. So far, the humidity is varying between 25 and 50%. Haven't had it in long enough to see how much it costs per month, but the meter doesn't look like a deli slicer, so I don't expect it to be too bad. And nothing seems to be rusting yet.

Joe , The machine shop part of my shop is block and
is 46 x 49 , I had the same problem . I heat with coal , but summer time was the problem and is caused by the fact that in the block building the temp is usually cooler than the outside air. The air that leaks or is vented in is warm and high humidity , when it hits the cool iron , the moisture falls out of the air like rain . I put two window A/C units in the north wall and they not only cool the shop , they pull the moisture out also. The drains in the A/C units look like a really leaky fosset.

This Md humidity is terrible.

Couple things.

So 70% is enough to keep things from rusting?

The shop will still have concrete troughs in it for the cattle. Kind of hard to describe, but the troughs have been partly dissasembled so the floor cuves up on each side. I think it would be nearly impossible to put cement over it with a barrier. Also the ceiling is only 9ft as it is. Maybe a thick paint like garage floor or drylock would be a good vapor barrier. Also, walls are cinder block with plaster coating. I would probably have to paint them.

Humidifiors would be auto-on/off type.

This is the barn in case you care. Far right 4 windows will be the shop area. Silo entrance will be shop entrance and I will have a garage door on the right wall facing the apple trees.

Hi Joe,

To dehumidifiy you either need to heat above 212� or refrigerate below the dew point of the air. Standard air is 50%rh at 70�

A humdifier adds moisture to the air.

Accurate realitive humidity is measured with a sling psychrometer. wet bulb temperature minus dry bulb temperature equals realitive humidity on as plotted on a psycrometric chart.

Iran has a huge problem with there buildings gathering moisture as there temperatures swing from 100� plus during the day time to below freezing at night and they use alot of earth buildings, So most of there buildings were colasping from too much moisture content.

What they did was to make a small diesel heater. They used a 55gal drum of diesel 10ft above the ground, so discharge pressure was 2.31psi, added a ball valve (flow control), then piped diesel into a small oriface (pipe cap drilled to .0625) then placed the oriface into a conical bucket (2" inside the bucket lip) with the bottom removed and fired it off. A mini blast furnace was born.

They plugged the doorways and windows with blocks made from earth leaving a roof opening of about 10" diameter for a chimney. After 24hrs at 2000� the 2ft walls were bone dry of moisture and the problem was solved. They used temperture cones for kilns for thermometers.

In your case, you would need to heat soak for 24hrs but only at 250� and naturally you would need to babysit your project as your walls are combustable. After the walls, ceiling and floor were dry, then you could seal them.

You could use a modified version of a outside blast furnace by taking heated air duct into your building via forced air fans. For less than $500 your problem would be solved of the current room humidity problems. Then you would need to seal the room to stop the problem from reoccuring.

70% may be a good starting point. Get a humidity gauge at the hardware or wal mart and put in there and see what it is . The ones I've bought don't seem real accurate I just picked the one that read in the average of the stack of them they all seem to of read different in the store.

I keep one going year round in our shops.It only kicks in when needed. The last one I bought has a digital readout and only goes to 70% at the highest this seems fine. It also is a low temp. model made to run at down to 45*

I think I'd seal that cement floor. Also.. may be cheaper to run a lamp than the dehumidifier. Some guys do that where they stoor their welding rods.

Once you get the room sealed, and the floor sealed.. I doubt you will have much problem.

paint that wood and seal the floor.. biggest issues.

Might set a cup of dessicant crystals in there, and dump the excess water out of the cup weekly... damp-dry or something like that..

Electric on a dehumd may eat you up.. it's essentially a mini air conditioner...
