Hi Ken,

It's a typo. One of the pictures shows the ampere range setting indicator. It goes to 500A in one range (probably 3 phase) and 350A in the other...wait a minute, you're just messing with us, aren't you? You've already demonstrated too much smarts to be seriously asking about a 4,000 amp welder. What would you use such a thing for, welding battleships together for better shipping rates?

Take care, Stan

So.. where do you plug in a 4000a welder at.. I'm guessing my 50a 220v welder plug ain't gonna handle it!!

You don't plug in, you just clamp on to the high-line. :) Saves on meter wear that way too....

How does a 3ph welder work, thought that only helped spin things, not up welding power?

You can get more power out of a three phase welder as opposed to a single phase welder. A single phase welder will draw more amps from the incomming supply line than a three phase meaning larger wire and breakers. It is cheaper to wire a shop for a three phase machine than a single phase due to smaller wire, conduit and breakers.
As for the single phase or three phase hookup, some of them have taps on the transformer that you connect for the voltage or phases applied.
Two taps may be connected for three phase while the same two may not be connected for single phase, just depends on the machine. Some are single phase only, some are three phase only.
Just an electricians 2 cents.

I've gone to look at quite a few high amp, low priced welders from ads. They all turn out to be three phase, that were auctioned or given away by some school or closed factory. Since few people have three phase, they're almost impossible to sell.

three phase maybe single phase Re: 4000 amp welder in reply to Slowpoke, 02-23-2006 23:13:41
Most of the "three phase" welders I've connected needed 600V but they used only two live lines, that's single phase. In fact the 400amp Hobart AC/DC/High Frequency/Mig/Tig in my garage can be wired for 240,480 or 600V.All single phase.

I look at the ID tag. If it says "3PH", it's not for me.

Looking at the terminal block is the only certain way to tell. If there is just two insulated blocks and a ground lug, she's single phase. Most are.

Hi John,

All those great welders on eBay going for next to nothing is the reason I asked about the feasibility of 3 phase service to a private residence on this forum a few months ago. I was also doing research about phase converters at the same time. Fortunately I got some hard-headed advice here which made me pause just long enough to begin to wonder just what I thought I was doing. I'm getting too old to be buying more things I don't need just because they're cool. After all, what am I going to do, start an industry so I'll have a valid reason for buying an industrial duty welder?

West is best, Stan

Stan, I asked Pacific Gas & Electric about supplying 3 phase to a building I want to erect. They said it would cost more than I wanted to pay. As it was, the cost for 200 amp single phase was $1200. Place transformer, drop down pole, underground 75' West along road frontage, then 125' North thru my conduit. Since then, they placed a transformer and the neighbor has received power. Maybe I will now use the same transformer? They wanted to know what equipment I would be running, and told me there would be a minimum monthly charge even if no power was used.
