anyone know how to get the grey coating off? Have a friend that makes metal cutouts and likes to rust them after finished. He has a hard time to get the grey off. Thanks Jack

Guys-I think he has tried most of the ways mentioned and it hasn't worked for him. T-bone I will have to find out what metal he is using. I think he is using cold roll (he did not know if it was hot or cold) Thanks for the replies,Jack

I took chrome or nickel plating off a bathtub drain fixture once by accident when using muriatic acid to clean out the drain.

If your talking about the mill scale on hot rolled plate, there are two ways that I have found that work the best. Sometimes you can get most of it off using a torch to heat it up and the scale will pop off, then use an angle grinder held flat against the metal and grind off the rest of the scale.
The other way is to sand blast it off.

Hi Jack,

Are you talking about using galvanized metal? That's not going to be cost effective as you would need a acid (murratic acid) to remove some of the galvanized. Most the glavanized today is applied by elctroplating and doesn't remove easy even with murratic acid and a electrical current. He might also try nitric acid. This is a outside job as both acids will off gas something terrible.

Why doesn't he want to use black iron to begin with?

Hi Bill,

I haven't looked into that but I would think a combination of nitic and hydrochloric acid would remove it. You might want to research that.

Electrolysis is the least labor intensive way.

If you have a medium current battery charger and a big plastic tub you have most of the stuff necescary..
