Periodic Weird Trans Noise 02 F250

About once a week while driving along I will get a weird noise from my '02 F250 transmission. It happens when switching gears. It is not a grinding gears type noise.

The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like you are driving over a rough patch in the road like they have ground down the asphalt to prepare for new asphalt.

Lasts about 2 seconds tops and I am unable to figure out how to recreate it.

Something to worry about? I bought this used and it is still under drivetrain warranty.

Thanks for the input. It is a gasser and I bought it used with 50K miles and bought a little warranty period on drivetrain because it had been used to tow.

It is an F250 crew cab long bed.

This is an absolutely perfect description "had the shudder at around 45 mph when under easy acceleration. Like driving over a rumble stip"

Thanks for the advice. I will bring it in.

As mentioned in another post, this is likely transmission shudder. A torque convertor problem with the F-series trucks w/auto trannies from '97-on. Sometimes changing the fluid and filter helps it, sometimes it doesn't. Might take it to the dorF dealer (if that's who warrantees your truck) and have them look at it as they will surely have seen it before.

Mine ('97 F150 w/ 75K miles) had the shudder at around 45 mph when under easy acceleration. Like driving over a rumble stip. Before I got it in for the fluid change, the tranny started to fail and the truck would barely pull itself. Problem solved after paying $$ for a tranny rebuild. Go to the F150 online board and read more about this problem.

Get it into a shop NOW, especially if a warranty is in effect.

FWIW, I suggest you have proof you reported this to the warranty holder, like a letter, cert or regis, ret receipt showing who accepted it for warranty holder...some of these have bad habit of forgetting any phone calls/conversations as soon as the warranty runs out..good luck

You must have purchased the extended warranty to still be under warranty coverage.

Is it a 5.4 liter with a 4R100 (E4OD) transmision? 4 X 4?

How many miles?

Fluid been changed every 20K to 30K. Transfer case oil changed also?

Extended cab with two piece driveshaft and carrier bearing?

Carrier bearing going bad? Probably not as these seem to howl and get louder with speed.

Could be worn bushing in transmission. Look for bronze material in oil pan.

Must be a diesel as they have a 5 year or 100000 mile drivtrain warranty.

Joe, Get the trans filter changed,then have the trans flushed.The fluid may be getting dirty or worn out.The friction modifyers in the fluid when depleted can cause a shudder condition.~brad
