I just got one of these -
Link
I was expecting it to go up smooth but when I put the air to it it sounds like an impact gun.
Rat-a-tat-tat.
Is this normal or have I broken it already ?

While I cannot vouch for the type of unit you have, all air/hydraulic pumps I've ever used (and I've used a number of them) do as you describe. They use large volumes of air fast, and expell it fast for the next shot. End result is the very loud exhausting of air you are hearing.

Sounds normal to me. That is the way the pump works.

As long as we are on the subject, do these jacks have to be pumped like a manual jack but are easier and faster because of the air assist? Or does the air do all the work? If two or more of the jacks are supplied by the same air source, can they somehow be made to lift equally, for instance lifting a side of a building?
For that matter, can two manual jacks be modified to work from one jack?

Thanks,
Slowpoke

Wouldn't be anywhere to connect pressure line to on the jack. As far as I know they have their own self contained circuit for oil and no way to tap into it.

The jack I got works with air or manually.
I bought it to build a press.
Hit the air to bring the ram down and manual to fine tune the bend.
I suppose if you fed 2 jacks off a 'y' on your air line they would rise together.
I don't know how this would affect pressure (psi) and volume (cfm) consumption from your compressor.
BTW- I bought two at the same time, one for a friend and got a discount.
Both jacks + shipping from CA to NC for $120.

I was at HF a couple of days ago and remember them being on sale, but don't remember the price.
I purchased 2-20 ton jacks from an auto supply (Kragens/Shucks)for $20 ea. That's why I was wondering if they could plumbed together and both be made to work using one handle.
