Hi dcop, I'll assume your using standard sch40 pipe. Using 1/8 6011 or 6010, keep your amps normal for welding heavy gauge, about 125a, and hold most of the molten puddle on the pipe while letting the puddle flow onto the 14ga. This method completes good fusion on both pieces. If you see your weld puddle become to hot and it's fixing to drop thru, speed up silghtly and move over a little onto the thicker pipe wall. The correct bead size is the thicknees of the thinner member. So your using 14ga and 3/16" then your weld leg needs to be about 3/32" or 14ga. In the real world, about a thin 1/4" bead would be great. If your butt welding the 14ga then I strongly suggest a lap joint with using a back stitch technique. The back stitch technique is where your welding from left to right, you deposit a small bead then quickly move out of the molten puddle to the right then quickly move back into the puddle and deposit another 1/2 bead then move out, repeating until done. This allows the weld to slightly cool before more weld is deposited. The worst thing you can do while stick welding thin metal is stop forward travel as that gives the base metal time to overheat thus drop your molten puddle onto the floor. Mistakes made in the bead surface have to be repaired "after" the weld has been completed. If you burn a hole, skip forward a 1/2" or so and then continue on. I would stop by a SM shop and get some 14ga shear drop off to practice on before tackling your task. T_Bone
