Hey.

I am about to build a small pole barn/shop at the house. It will be pipe post and c purlin. My question is about what amp range would be the best to weld the c purlin. I think it about 14 ga. I will be using a 230 amp. welder. I have welded some in the past, but mostly heavy metal. I have several pounds of 1/8th 6011 rods. I don't want to blow threw that thin metal.

We are just finishing a 30 x 30 shop addition that we had a Mexican kid start to weld together with 6011 rod. WHAT A MESS! He got the poles up and the purlins welded to the top I beams before we ran him off. I had to go back and cut about 98 percent of the welds loose and reweld them. I have not had much luck with 6011 rod on new metal. Use 6013 and probably something smaller than one eighth rod unless you are a real good welder. Too much heat and you will burn all kinds of holes in the c channel, too little and the weld will not stick. I used a small Miller mig with solid core wire and it worked real well. The only problem, the mig cost me over $600.00. Practice on some scrap pieces before starting the project. Save a lot of headaches later on. You don't want the roof falling on your head because of faulty welding.

Hi dcop,

I'll assume your using standard sch40 pipe. Using 1/8 6011 or 6010, keep your amps normal for welding heavy gauge, about 125a, and hold most of the molten puddle on the pipe while letting the puddle flow onto the 14ga. This method completes good fusion on both pieces. If you see your weld puddle become to hot and it's fixing to drop thru, speed up silghtly and move over a little onto the thicker pipe wall.

The correct bead size is the thicknees of the thinner member. So your using 14ga and 3/16" then your weld leg needs to be about 3/32" or 14ga. In the real world, about a thin 1/4" bead would be great.

If your butt welding the 14ga then I strongly suggest a lap joint with using a back stitch technique.

The back stitch technique is where your welding from left to right, you deposit a small bead then quickly move out of the molten puddle to the right then quickly move back into the puddle and deposit another 1/2 bead then move out, repeating until done. This allows the weld to slightly cool before more weld is deposited.

The worst thing you can do while stick welding thin metal is stop forward travel as that gives the base metal time to overheat thus drop your molten puddle onto the floor. Mistakes made in the bead surface have to be repaired "after" the weld has been completed. If you burn a hole, skip forward a 1/2" or so and then continue on.

I would stop by a SM shop and get some 14ga shear drop off to practice on before tackling your task.

6013 rod 3/32 inch, try about 75 amps, increase a little until you get proper pentration. The 6013 rod is shallow pentration and will not blow through the c purlin nearly as quick at 6011.

The 5/32 rod would seem too big for the thin metal. I would more likely use the 3/32 6011 for the project.

I agree with supe99gm, 5/32 is way too big. I think they meant 3/32. I have done it with 1/8 rod but it's not easy.

Be careful welding anything galvanized, the fumes are very toxic.

Just did a similar project...added onto my shop using purlin on pipe. I am using an old gas powered Miller welder that you literally unplug the lead and plug it into a different receptacle to change amperages and the lettering is not easy to read any longer...so, I just try it on scrap first. But, I did use 5/32 6011 rod and I would guess 90 amps when welding purlin to pipe...concentrating the heat more on the pipe. When I welded purlin to purlin, I dropped down one setting...so that should be 75 amps. Had just a couple minor burn-throughs in the whole project...and since I am not a pro with the old stick welder, I was happy with that...

I'd say around 75amps and use 5/32 rod. Id of course test some out before doing it for real

Your best bet is to run a few sample welds on some scrap. I weld mostly heavy metal as wel but, I would bet you'd be welding around 90 amps...take a guess and try it before welding actual pieces for your shop.
