Bought a 1990 F250 a week ago was comeing home from work friday when a trans cooler line blew did not realize until tran would not pull any more. Repaired the line filled with trans fluid it moved 6 inches and stopped will not go a head or reverse. Is the trans shot or just the pump? it is an automatic with OD. Any help would be appreciated.

Chris someone added an aux cooler, they just slipped rubber hose over steel line. it was vey cold that day [-12deg.] i think that the oil was thick and the clamp loosened up and just popped off. i have heard that some of these trans dont have a filter just a screen?

Did you continue to try and drive it after you first noticed that a transmission problem was in the making? The reason I ask is that if you noticed slipping but did not stop immediately then you probably burned clutch friction discs or scored one-way-clucthes or ruined bushings. If you pulled over immediately then maybe all you lost was the pump prime. Is the level up to the full mark now when idling in park and warmed up? If it is then you will have to do a pressure test to see if there is pressure. If there is pressure then you probably have a ruined transmission and will have to rebuild or get a used unit to put in.

Does it have a 5.8 liter gas engine in it or something else? How many miles are on the transmission?

The transmission has a strainer / filter which strains at about 30 to 50 microns. It does not really fall into a filter category since it has to be open enough to function at -40 degrees F.

I'm no auto trans expert, but I do rebuild and repair a few. My first Q is: what caused the cooler line to blow? 1 a blockage in the cooler 2 pressure regulator in the valve body stuck. 3 line did'nt blow at all,it either rubbed a thin spot or hole in the steel line ,or the rubber line rotted and blew out. As far as the pump being shot, unless you ran it for more than a minute or two and revved the engine wildly with no fluid at all I would bet the pump is OK. Remember, the convertor is still full and draining back to the trans and that should be enough to keep from burning the pump. I would pull the pan and do a filter change and while the pan is off blow out the cooler and cooler lines with air. Whatever you end up doing, please post back and tell what you find. just because it don't move, don't make it junk
