Koler 4 cylinder engines. I picked up a motor/genny set up today and it has a 4 cylinder Koler flat head engine and I need to pick some brains as to what I really have and maybe how old it might be.
Thanks

The older Onan and Koehler generators put out full sine-wave power just like the power company does. Many if not most of the newer generators do not and only put out a peak of 150 VAC instead of the normal 170 VAC (120 volts AC house current peaks at 170 VAC on the top of the sine-wave). Smokstak.com has a great forum specifically for older Koehler generators. It's at: Link

You can register for free and be able to post. If you've customized some of your settings with your web-browser though, you might have trouble. The "allow cookies" function has to be working, and by default, it usually is unless you intentionally disabled it.

We had a Kohler 4 cylinder engine / generator at a cottage we bought in 1957 - it wasn't new then but it worked well. It was water cooled and ran at 1200 RPM and would start when a light was turned on. I believe it was 12 volt starting as we could jump it from the "new" car when the battery was down. It had a hand crank but the way it was set in the shed we couldn't get at the crank. I believe it put out 1000 or 1500 watts. The automatic control for starting was mounted above the generator end in front of the radiator. I remember that when one spark plug fouled the lights would really flicker. In the mid to late 60's we upgraded to a larger generator with a single cylinder Kohler engine at 1800 RPM. We got power lines in 68.
I might have a manual from the old generator if it would help you.
