Just wondering if it would be a good idea to use unleaded gas or gas with 10% alochoal. I have been using the gas with 10% alochoal in my older chain saw with no problem just wanted to know if unleaded would be better. Its a new chain saw so i can use what ever. Its a Poulan 18 inch chain saw . My old one is a Poulan 14 inch, it still runs good i just got a bigger tree to cut down needed a longer bar.thanks

Chainsaws are the hottest ( temperature ) running two stroke engines made. The cooling fins are kept small to reduce the size of the saw. And reduce weight. The compression ratio is high in order to squeeze more power out of a smaller/lighter saw. So now we have a hot running high compression engine running on 87 octane tractor gas. What happens if a wee speck of dirt restricts fuel flow a little bit? That is is the operators doesn't already have the high mixture plenty lean. DETONATION, knock, pin etc. Are you going to hear it..... ....no? Is that cylinder wall going to be scuffed from a piston with broken/stuck rings or even have a hole melted through? Many engine failures attributed to "oil failure" were actually pounded to death via detonation. How much are money are you saving by running your saw on 87 octane instead on 92 octane? That's right, about enough money saved to purchase one candy bar a year. The lube oil better say "alcohol compatable" or don't use alcohol fuels with that oil.

Between work and home I have 15 or 16 2 stroke engines. Most are Sthil but there is afew other brands in the mix. They range in age from new to over 15 years old. I have always run 10% in them with no problems other than the normal matenence. I have a Sthil demo saw that is 15 years old and has never had anything but ethonal in it. I have not had to replace any rubber lines, gas filter,or carb parts. I just make sure the mix is right and do not use old gas. I repete, I do not use old gas!

I stick with unleaded gas and I use the highest
octane grade. It runs cooler with the high rev
engines.

I heard that the small 2 stroke engines like a higher octane. I use Stihl equipment, but have always use 87 oct. Is there any real benefit from going up to 89 or 91?

Won't hurt a thing. I've been using E-10 in all of my engines ever since it became available and have never experienced any problems.

I use unleaded only, Ive been told that alochoal will damage 2 cycle engines by causing too much wash down of oil on the cylinder walls.
