I am over on E-Bay looking at Corvettes. After looking for a couple of minutes it comes up--you have performed an illegal operation and knocks me off the board.
WhAT can I do about this??
thanks

Go to update.microsoft.com and check for latest updates. You might just need to get the latest patches for Explorer. (and any other updates too)

Too many programs have hogged all the RAM and you don't have enough RAM installed. Try a different browser too.

Look in your owner"s manual to see if that vintage machine has a diagnostic test that it can run on itself. My daughter"s Dell developed Blue Screen errors one day before the warranty ran out last year. I ran the diagnostics program and discovered bad memory modules which Dell replaced. Root cause turned out to be more than the memory and they swapped out the mother board, HD, and more memory modules and it"s ok now.

I figure that if you are getting these things only on Ebay it may be menmory related due to the high graphics content that you will find there. As others have said you may be maxing out the memory and triggering the event.

I have an old machine that I can"t afford to replace right now and I have windows ME. I have bumped up the memory but it has issues too. I have developed a regimen of defragging often, run anti-spyware several times a week (sometimes every day, and I keep on top of windows and explorer updates. Hey they"re free so why not.

There are also very good utilities out there that you can get free downloads on for trial. Ace Utilities is good as well as PC Tuneup. Punch these in your browser and they will likely direct you to download sites.

Good luck.

Lenray,

Let me say right off the bat that I don't wanna ruffle any feathers; that's the very last thing I want to do. I'm just trying to help and am trying to be "right in your face, honest with you".

However, contrary to what anyone tells you, that BSOD or "Blue Screen Of Death" is 'always' caused by a bad memory module, a bad buss connection or a defective motherboard.

Since all Win 9x and Win ME are memory driven operating systems as opposed to the application driven NT systems (Win NT, Win 2K, Win XP, etc.), it (the "crash") will show up in these systems first.

For years, people have been wrongly accusing the 9x OS's for this problem, when in fact, the real reason lies in the cheaper hardware living inside their machine.

You have three choices: You can live with it. You can change to a NT based operating system, which will "mask" the problem somewhat but will still occasionally show up as a "lock". Or, you can go out and buy a better computer.

I've never understood the mindset of folks when shopping for a new computer. They always shop around and try to buy the cheapest they can find. This is like saying, "Give me the worst and most troublesome system you've got".

Sorry, but this is just a hard cold fact of this computer world we now live in. :>(

Allan

Thanks for the thoughts and info.
It is a Dell comp. And the only place this ever happens is at E-Bay.
And at E-Bay it only happens if I try to get selective. Go to Chevrolet then Corvette and then put in the years I am looking at. I can look at a complete page of cars but when I go to page 2 it hits me--you have performed an illegal operation.
Again thanks.

Lenray,

Try cleaning out your Internet history and see if it does any good. Also, you might try to clear your cookies and see if there is a nasty tracker lurking in there.

Perhaps I misinterpreted your problem.

This message you are getting is the blue screen with the white lettering. Right? The only way to get it going again is to restart your computer?

Allan

Just a wild guess..is it running out of memory? Or as Allan sugests, when it goes for more memory at a fast pace, it hits a bad/poor memory spot?

Your computer doesn't want to look at Corvettes, it wants to look at girls. Bet it is win98 or worse yet, ME. Could be anything, includng a poorly written software program running in the background.

So many things can cause that from virus to spyware to glitches in Internet Explorer. Does it just happen on Ebay (doubtful) or most any site. Do you have a pop-up stopper installed? You might try installing Mozilla as your browser and it may stop this then again maybe your wife don't want you looking at those Corvettes.
click below and download Mozilla Firefox for a more stable browser.

Could have happened with 98, which I never had. Very common with Win 95, except I only noticed it on installed (non-internet programs). XP is a vastly improved version.

I'm no computer guru. I'll bet you have windows 98. I had the same problem and it kept getting worse and on more web sites. I went to all kinds of help places and found out 98 was bad about that. Finally was told to reformat and reinstall 98. I did and it only helped a little and for a short while. The way I fixed it was to buy a new computer. It has win.XP and has never done it. L.D.
