Ground clamps get hot from resistance Randy. Check to be sure the cable is in good shape where it goes into the clamp. Grinding a clean spot where you make the connection on the base metal will also eliminate excess resistance.

Hi Randy, Steve said it all. If the clamp connection is clean, cut off about 6" of cable and reatach the clamp and also make sure there's good spring tension on clamp. If the clamp is too easy to open replace the spring or the clamp. Use a pair of vise grips on the clamp too the table or work piece and that will tell you if there's a weak spring if the problem goes away.
