What are people using for protection when sand blasting? I bought a siphon feed tube and full head cover from TSC and 50 pound bags of black media on sale for $5 a bag.

What other type of mask or filter to I need?

I looked at the respirators they had at TSC and all of them said not to be used for sandblasting.

What I use for sandblasting. I built my own cabinet 4 feet wide 28 inches deep, cost me about 300.00 for the plywood , plexiglass window, gloves and a shopvac to pull out the dust.

We handle (sell) the Black Beauty blasting media, and one of its selling points is, that there is NO silica in it. That being said, whatever surface your blasting will most likely create dust from being blasted, so my recommendation is to get a dust mask that"s rated NIOSH 95---that"s a double filter media mask, made by 3M and others.
Using the coal slag though, you"ll probably be happier with a full hood, both for stopping the dust, and also for protection from the media being blown around. That coal slag is extremely hard and sharp, and (depending on grit size) can leave hundreds of little nicks and cuts (don"t ask how I know, LOL).

Get the best you can afford and wear it or don't blast. Any is better than nothing but not always. Keep others away from your blasting area and wear something when doing clean up blowing dust also. I'm not sure if there is silica in the black beauty or black coal slag stuff but still wear a respirator of some kind. Best thing to do is have fresh air supplied hood or mask. I found a fresh air pump military surplus for my blasting hood. Bullard and 3M make hoods and Graingers and many others sell them. Also might check with a paint store local or safety equipment supply.

Randy, I can not tell you what is the best brand, but probably if you hit a good contrator supply co. they will have filters for cement sawing. I live 6 miles from a silica sand mine. It has been closed for 15-20 years, and will open again in the next few weeks. I can't stress the importance of a good mask enough. There simply are no old mine workers. I run with the EMS and will certianly guarentee you that smoking and silica dust will not be my chosen route to death. Dave NE IA
