John --

I consider the Swiss-made micrometers -- Etalon and Tesa -- to be the cream of the world's crop, but they are expensive . . . last time I checked a 0-1 inch Tesa was going to go over US$ 300 with California sales tax.

There are a number of micrometers that are a small step down the quality ladder and a big step down the price ladder. The others have already mentioned Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, and Mitutoyo; I'll add Scherr-Tumico (US), Mauser, Moore & Wright (England), and NSK (Japan).

Several of the mail-order tool supply houses sell a line of Polish micrometers that are pretty darn good; at a third the price of Starrett, B&S, and so on the Polish micrometers are a great value.

Finally, there are some "Mitutoyo-lookalike" micrometers being imported from China that are FAR superior to the typical Chinese micrometers. I would hesitate to buy these mail order, but judging from the examples I've examined, I would not be at all surprised if some of Mitutoyo's execs aren't staying awake at night worrying about the Chinese competition.

As for digital calipers, I've never used any that have really satisfied me. The best of the bunch I've tried are Mitutoyo's "coolant resistant" models. After trying digital calipers a half dozen times over the last twenty years, I gave up on them and stick with dials.

John

I have seen sets of those "Mitutoyo-lookalike" micrometers for sale and was wondering if anyone has or knows anyone that has had experience using them and if there built as well as regular Mitutoyo? i know there has been a lot of patent infringement in china and it is quite possible that they are an exact copy of Mitutoyo's stuff.

I agree with the list and also that calipers are only as accurate as the person using them. I spent 7 years as a quality analyst and always tried to stay away from calipers as a measuring option whenever possible. 3 different people usually equaled 3 different results, no matter how well trained they were in their use!!

Starrett is the best, then Mitutoyo, then Brown and sharpe and then Etalon,---Swiss made and expensive. Stay away from the China junk----cheap but junk.

As a tool & die maker, I recomend Brown&Sharpe mic's & dial calipers. The calipers are swiss made, and the value line mic's are American. The starrett tools are o.k., but calipers are very coarse. I also like B&S's indicators, or Gem.(they are made in Cleveland) just my opinion!:v)

in my 45+ yrs. as a machinist I"ve used them all
starret is the best followed by brown&sharpe
just remember when using mikes the lightest feel is the most acurate mikes are more acuurate than dial calipers some production shops won"t let you use calipers bottom line there only as acurate as the person reading them. Hope this helps e-mail is open

I agree, Starrett, Mitutoyo and Brown & Sharp are the best. I LOVE my mitutoyo 0-6" mic set, and my Brown & Sharp Dial calipers. I have a Starrett digital calipers, but I've had nothing but problems with it the last year(havn't used it since atleats October). I put in new batteries, and it was good for maybe a month, but now it's off by over .020" once I get up to 2". I also used to have a Mitutoyo dial calipers, and it went to he11 pretty quick. Another guy I work with and one I go to school with both have mitutoyo dial calipers. Now they both are looking for new ones, same problem as mine.
Fowler isn't horrible, and I do have a few things such as my test indicator.

I'd recommend going with a dial calipers, easier to maintain, no batteries etc... I went with mitutoyo micrometers because I don't like the spindle locks on Starrett, and I got a REALLY good deal on mine.

Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, and Mitutoyo all have good reputations. Some of the Swiss brands like Tesa and Etalon are also very good (and VERY expensive). The big thing here is what you need, and the fact that any instrument is only as good as its reader. This is particularly true with micrometers, which take quite a bit of practice to get truly accurate measurements with. Even then, it"s easy for even an experienced person to mis-read them and thus get a wrong measurement from a good mike. I know plenty of good machinists that use import micrometers from places like Enco and get excellent results with them.

Starrett is #1 by me too. Calipers are handy but I don't trust them to be more accurate than +/- .002". They seem to be prone to jaw wear pretty quickly. Get carbide tipped mics if you are going to use them much.

I will have to agree, Starrett is top of the line. G.A.L makes a good precision tool set for the A.W.S.
