I do quite a little general maintenence and summer mechanical work out in my shop. That said, I accumulate quite a little misc. nuts and bolts. It seems I don't accumulate nearly enough 1/4" and 3/8" to keep up with my needs but the 5/16" bin is always running over. Do manufacturers use less 5/16" fasteners or am I just not working on the right stuff...? Thanks, Glenn FitzGerald

Glenn,

Those 5/16 work for my needs, and I always seem to have them handy because I used to have a chain link fence business. The bands used on them required 5/16 carriage bolts, so I have several hundred left over. I do have a hard time keeping enough 1/4" and 3/8" on hand too. I guess I need to buy them in bulk.

I seem to go thru more 5/16" ?? I think it's because I don't really trust 1/4" so if I can.. anything I can drill out from 1/4" to 5/16 will get the bigger size...especially stuff that will have some strain on it...

Guess I'm heavy handed, but I end up snapping off more 1/4 than using... using only 3/8 rachet and 'choking up' on it to reduce the torque and I always stop about 1/4" turn after I should :-)

Box up all that 5/16 stuff and send it to me...I'll use it. Not really... I have a good supply of most everything up to 3/4". You work in a mill for 38 years.. you ah... accumulate.

I hate to think who's got all my 'stuff' to deal with after I'm no longer wrenching... sadly, my kids even have a clue what most of it is, and will just toss it out.
