I just learned of this board, so I don't know if it's the place to post this question but....I'm getting a new car(Acura MDX) soon and would like to try keeping it longer than my usual 100k miles. What's the opinion on oil grades, brands, and change frequency? What about Mobil 1? What about Pure One and Mobil 1 oil filters? Thanks

Have used Texaco Havoline oil for the last fifty years. Its the only oil sold in all 50 states. Change oil and filter every 2000 miles. Run all my vechiles at least 100,000 miles.

I use Mobil 1 oil and filters in everything I own, cars, trucks, tractor, log splitter, lawn mowers, etc. Just be sure to let the rings seat before using any synthetic. You'll know they are seated when the engine stops burning oil.

I agree with Al on not using the Mobil 1 for breaking in an engine. Back in 1976 I bought a new Yamaha TT500. I was very proud of that machine so nothing but the best was going into it. I used Mobil 1 right out of the chute, but I couldn't keep oil in it. My theory is that the Mobil 1 lubricated so well that the rings and such didn't get a chance to get acquainted with their adjoining parts like cylinder walls. I went to a conventional mineral oil (Castrol 20W-50), and the problem went away.

For everyday applications synthetic oil has traditionally had more drawbacks than advantages. However, at this point Mobil 1 is a good product which equals or betters the characteristics of mineral oil. It is recommended that the engine be broken in using conventional mineral oil before changing to synthetic. Synthetic is not the oil of choice in engines that require a high viscosity lubricant, or in engines that are worn or have loose clearances. A 2-cycle engine places different demands on its oil than a 4-cycle engine. A 2-cycle engine using synthetic oil can be made to produce a little more power, will have longer spark plug life, and will not smoke. But, all things being equal a 2-cycle engine using synthetic oil will wear out sooner than one using a good 2-cycle mineral oil...Al English

Off topic, but I'm gonna answer it.

100k miles is only Usual for folks who waste money on newer cars. Electronic Fuel Injection (an injector per cylinder, not that drizzle crap GM put out), when properly maintained, has extended engine life tremendously. Keep the computer happy and don't overheat it and the mill will last much longer than the other parts.

As to oil, I bought my truck with 111,000 miles on it. It had had many different brands/wts of oils in it. I run engines harder(higher revs, more WFO) than most folks, so I always use Mobil 1 (15/50) in the truck. I now have 294,000 miles on the truck and the engine/transmission (manual filled with sythetic gear oil) are in better shape than the rest of the truck. I'm going to see just how far this engine will go. 300k looks easy maybe 500k!

I use sythetic in autos and two-strokes, but not in all machines. You can't afford to run it in leaky/smokey stuff.
