Hello I know this is off topic but I didn't get any replies on the truck forum,so I'm gonna try here.
I have an old 66 chevy C30 with a 11' frame on it. Good solid almost rust free old workhorse. I want to build a flat dump bed for it and was looking at the scissor hoist kit from surplus center in Lincoln, NE. These are rated at 5 ton and include the bed hinges and hardware.I am planning on using a pto pump set up to operate it. The most load that would ever need to lift might be 4 tons(crushed stone)but usually much less and I wouldn't be using it everyday. I need to know if this hoist would hold up ok I don't want one that won't lift or worse collapses. If anyone knows about them I would appreciate your comments. Thanks, Mike

Enjoyed reading this post. I have a 65 C30 that I would like to put a 9ft bed and hoist on. The original flat bed is all rotted and rusted out.

Hi Mike,

I have an '83 K30 with 8ft dump body. I've had it since it was new. It has a scissors lift rated at 5 ton. I don't know who the manufacturer of the lift is but it was supplied by Peabody/Galion as part of the dump body installation. The truck weighs 7,500# empty and I have weighed in at 13,800# loaded before. That's a payload of 6,300#. The dump body itself weighs in at 1,300# so that's a total lift of 7,600# - almost 4 ton. The truck has a gross rating of 10,000# so I am overloaded from that standpoint but the lift has no trouble at all dumping it. No sign of working hard at all. Material is 3/4 crushed stone also. I don't do that often, but I have never had a problem. The one thing I added to the stock installation was a check/restrictor valve in the hydraulic line to the lift cylinder. That valve has a nylon check in it that you drill a small hole through. That serves to limit the maximum speed of lowering of the body - something I found to be desirable, rather than feathering the control valve. Of course, the location of the lift mechanism relative to the body pivot point will have a direct bearing on the ability to lift the load and also the maximum dump angle.

I have no idea if the lifts at Surplus Center are of similar quality/ability to the one I have since I have no experience with them specifically. However, they appear to be similar just looking at the pictures in the catalog and I have found that a scissors lift, as a basic design, works just fine.

I have one just like the one from Surplus Center, but 6 ton, have used it on a silage wagon for 15 years and no problems.

Don't know if this will help or not. Had a friend that had one of them on a 3/4 ton dodge and it wouldn't lift as much as what he could haul. Lift wasn't strong enough to lift a full load of gravel. It did have the eletor/hyd unit on it. My self I like the stright push type dump set ups over the scissor type. Have a ford 1 ton that will lift any thing you put in to it, it has doulbe cylinders and is a stright puch type.
