I have a chance to get 300 pieces of 5/8 x 10 rebar @ $1 ea. I need 150 20 footers. Is there a reason why 2 pieces can't be welded together to get 20'? I haven't seen the material yet but was told it's "rusty". How much rust is acceptable? If no blue is showing, is that too much rust for use in a 6" floor?

Why not space the ends 6" apart and put a control joint at this location. With your size slab, you"ll need a control joint for cracking anyway.

My second vote goes to the 10"-10" x 5"-10"-5" arrangment of the rebar as suggested by another.

Hi Slowpoke,

This morning I got some 3/8" rebar and 3/8" mild steel rod, beveled ends to points and welded butt joints with 3/32 7018 stick. I also butt welded pieces of 3/8" rebar with one beveled end against a flat end, and two flat ends together. I ground off the welds until they were the same diameter as the rest of rods. When I was finished, I had 1 mild steel rod and one length of rebar with double beveled butt joints, and 2 other lengths of rebar with beveled to flat and flat to flat butt joints.

I put each piece under the 90 degree bender of an 80 ton press and bent at the weld to about 135 degrees (in other words, halfway between the 180 degree straight rod and the 90 degree bend the press was capable of producing.) The mild steel rod showed pre-separation stress but no actual tearing. The bevel to bevel rebar showed a stress crack without visible separation. The bevel to flat end rebar and flat end to flat end rebar both tore almost entirely through, and broke with negligible hand pressure. The cracked but untorn rebar broke with moderate hand pressure, the mild steel rod with slightly more. By hand pressure I mean holding a rod at each end and trying to snap it like a piece of kindling. Any child could have broken either of the cracked pieces; a weak adult might have had trouble breaking either of the other two.

That's it, for what it's worth.

Stan, thanks, you sure went to a lot of work do do that test. Now if you had a way to test the joint under tension, or shear it, that test would more suit my use of the rebar. The welds are just for straight line use in the slab to get more length out of the rebar supply on hand. But I suppose the time it take to prepare and weld would be more than it takes to wire tie them together at the expense of more rebar. It's six of one and half dozen of the other.

You talked about it being six of one, etc. as far as whether it made more sense to weld or wire your rebar. I ran into the same sort of problem when I was forming up a long retaining wall on two sides of my property. I had plenty of rebar but I hate wiring up that stuff. I always seem to end up with about two bleeding rips on my forearms and two puncture wounds in my hands per 25' of forms.

I made a couple of 50' 6/3 extension cords and dragged an arc welder along the work. I enjoyed it much more than tying wire, but there was probably no time saved. A definite benefit to welding your metal is that it doesn't shift and slip when you're working around it. I've never been able to get enough of that soft wire on my rebar, or twist it tight enough, to keep the metal from slipping some as I did other work on the forms. The welded stuff stays right where you put it.

I was fooling around with some 3/8 rebar this evening, trying to see what kind of butt joints I could get with oxy/acetylene. Poor, I have to report. When I used the hydraulic shear to cut off the welds, the rebar was noticeably brittle within the whole heat affected zone.

I guess I'm going to have to do some research on steel reinforced concrete. To some extent I can visualize the physical forces which bear on materials in uncomplicated configurations, but I'm at a complete loss to imagine how shear, and tension, or the effect of brittleness or other qualities of the metal affect rebar which is encased in concrete.

The reason I go on about this is because even if some grape grower got the rebar you were going to buy, you're still going to pour that slab. That means that you're going to be dealing with these same issues pretty soon---only with some other rebar.

Hi Stan,

I got my introduction to placing rebar with my first house, the one I'm still living in. It's underground with the back wall holding 15' of dirt. Got engineering and the guy I almost hired for the walls wanted $10k (14 yrs ago) to place a couple tons of rebar ($1.5k worth at the time). He told me it took a long time to tie rebar.

I didn't know any better but didn't have the money to pay him so I bought a couple of winders and a roll of twist ties. Guess what? I can now tie that much rebar in about 2 days- by myself, without any injury. Professional guys say the twist ties are too slow, but for those of us who don't do formwork every day, they're a blessing. And exactly what you needed. Next time, find somebody catering to the concrete trade and leave the welder in the shop.

Reason for the rebar is to control cracking in the concrete. If a crack occurred near a failed rebar joint, it might pop loose. Then you'd have nothing to control movement of the crack, possibly catastrophic failure. You need continuous rebar across any crack.

As far as welding rebar goes, there's a large difference between graded and ungraded, like the home centers sell. Graded is consistent, ungraded will have hard and soft spots, making it difficult to weld. All the engineering I've seen for our houses calls for grade 60, an intermediate grade.

Hi Tom,

The $10K for two days work addresses one of the two ways I feel about engineers. On the one hand I admire the attitude that every problem can be solved and that out of all possibilities there is a best solution. On the other hand, the engineering approach to business seems to be that they will provide the customer with the very best solution, no matter how much overkill is involved, and no matter how much it costs. If you're a big commercial customer, you probably have the clout to argue for just enough engineering to get the job done. If you're a homeowner you're SOL and go into sticker shock, too. The underlying situation is that there is no general designation---engineers, lawyers, doctors, scientists---that assures quality thinking; it's strictly on an individual basis, just like everything else in the world.

Stan, apparently I wasn't clear. My engineer specified $1500 worth of rebar. It was a contractor who wanted $8500 labor to place it, what I can now do in two days by myself. At that time there were few cast-in-place wall contractors here, everything was block.

The building dept here asked who I'd hired for the engineering. Upon hearing, they said that I'd be fine with half the rebar. I said "great, which half?". They said it was up to me, the owner/builder. Now that makes sense. The decision is left to the guy who knows the least.

I bought the rebar.

Don't quite share your view of engineers. As the saying goes, they wear two pair of underwear- just in case. When you buy a drawing from them, they're putting their butts on the line.

A good one will also figure how to save you some money, within his engineering comfort zone. For instance, I built curved walls. Primarily for esthetic reasons, but I also know they're stronger. When I asked the engineer about it, he said he could engineer the reinforcing for my curves and save me some rebar, but it would cost substantially more than the extra rebar he'd spec for a straight wall.

Overbuilt? Probably, but a tiny percentage of the total construction cost. Half the rebar, if I'd chosen not to use it, was all of $750.

The next house was for a client. I was the skill guy, helped by two college kids who knew nothing. After a half hour using a winder, they were tying rebar almost as fast as I do.

The rebar sounds like a good deal, unless ate up with rust, I"d go for it. Almost all rebar I"ve ever seen has light rust on it.

Almost all rebar comes from India (duh! who"ed ever thunk of that?)

In India, brokers negoiate all over the world to buy old ships, especially Russian ones. Freighters, warships, etc. They beach them, wench them up as far as possible, and using gantry cranes salvaged from previous ships, began the very dangerous work of disassembling them. The steel hull planks are cut and hauled to a nearby mill where they are run thru and sliced into thin strips. The strips then run thru a hot rolling forge where they are given the familiar rebar crosshatch finish and slightly oval shape. Then they sell it to the rest of the world.

Next time you see rebar, think..... . Russian Ship!!

Overlaping is the most common thing to do. Most standerds call for a 30 overlap. The formula is X times the bar dia. This means you need a 18" overlap. If you splice it you need a 36" piece. 18" on each side. Welding is permited at certain times. It is very invold so most engineers do not allow it.

Many military buildings and radio towers and some commerical buildings use a Ufer ground system which does require that all rebar to be tack welded for electrical contact. Most water tank footers also use this prinicple. I think the rust and the reaction it has with concrete makes the grounding system even better. Go to google and look up Ufer ground.

As the plot thickens, at42x80 ft. crossed on 1ft. centers you are about 200 ft short of what you need. As an electrician for years now and working side by side with Rod Busters while I"m roughing in electrical they don"t weld cuz it would be cost prohibitive. Whole lot faster to carry wire ties than welding leads. Heres a fact that I have seen in the last 20 years on airport tarmacs and interstates under construction; They do use 1 inch ties mabye 30" long to tie joints together in the pour.They use fiber concrete. Sounds like you already have a good base to pour on. And don"t forget pouring time, re-bar just plain sucks if your the one humpin the concrete!

Richard, at that size, I'll leave it to the contractor to do the pour. I have about 800 feet of mixed 1/2, 5/8, 7/8 on hand. I'll put the heavy stuff at the door opening and work back from there. Anything left over will go in the driveway. I also made about 1000 3x3 dobies with wire ties, so the rebar will sit in the center of the slab. But working on a limited budget takes forever.

Rauville is right, welding is allowed. As far as rust not a big deal unless the metal is flaking off. Anything that can be removed with a wire brush is ok but that doesn't mean that the rebar needs to be cleaned that way prior to using it.

Just another thought. Besides lapping the joints stagger them also. If your run is 20', run it with a 5' & 10' & 5' and then the next one parallel to it use a 10' & 10' then back to 5,10,5.

I would think that would it would be worth taking, unless the material is scaling heavy rust flakes off.

I used to be involved on high rise projects in NYC and been around quite a bit of reinforced concrete structures, building components etc. I don't ever recall seeing lap joints being welded, or called for on structural drawings etc., also have to be careful when field cutting steel with a torch although that applies more to structural shapes and connections, the rationale behind it is of the same concern, brittleness, which I can agree might be an issue with welding bar of that size. With the amount of joints that get tied, it would be insane to weld as no one could work close to you. They usually set up a machine that shears and bends the rebar and the Lathers do all the fabricating, tying of the joints and installation inside the form. I can also see the Inspection controls needed when field welded joints are concerned, In NYC, a licensed professional engineer has to inspect and sign off on a technical responsibilty report for all structural connections, especially welded joints, they even go to the steel fabricator to inspect fabricated sections etc. It sounds ridiculus but it's done for good reason, and if properly done from beginning to end on a project, it's no hinderance to the production. Way off here, back to reality as this is for the "Skyscrapers" and like, a lot of the rebar that is placed can be seen with no blue left on it, is rusty, just not corroded with heavy flakes peeling off, I would use that material, tie off the 150 joints you appear to have, use the setting chairs, maker sure the bar has enough coverage above and below, ideally 3" both sides with a 6" slab, but as best can be done. I am a fan of reinforcing, be it rebar and 6"x6" woven wire mesh, W.W.M. the latter I would think in conjunction with fibre admixtures, ought to be a good slab mix, not sure what kind of loading you can get away with, but it's interesting to hear about how it's performed for all the people who write about it here, I've never done a lot with the fibre admixtures. The only concern with regular rebar, not galvanized, epoxy coated or what have you is that concrete has capillaries that allow fluid to seep in, if it is corrosive, and reacts with the rebar, it will expand the steel 3x its size and spall the concrete, as what happened to older bridge decks due to salt used in the winter. Don't mind me lately I'm full of all kinds of wondering babble, overkill etc. LOL, but it sounds like a decent deal I'd use it without hesistation.

Thats all-right, I see what you are saying, like butt-welds on a pipe, I know that would be a non-typical connection in my field, but not knowing 2 things, will the bond be strong and what kind of tension can one expect on the bar after, but that's being overl technical, common sense would lead me to believe that if a tied connection would hold, so would a good butt weld. I do wonder how much tension would be applied, does not seem like a slab on grade would produce a lot, but again I'm just BS'ng about it, not like your building a launch pad for the space shuttle, I hope ! LOL It would be interesting to see what kind of forces are applicable to this particular slab detail, for fun I suppose, certainly don't know that off the top of my head.

It doesn't get much below 28� in the area and the soil is sandy clay. I have 6 mill plastic covered by 2" of sand level with the grade. It's been sitting for a couple of years. Pour will be 6". I guess I'll call the inspector and see what he says about welded butts.

You could always lightly sandblast it ?

I built a retaining wall and used rebar in it and the footers I welded it together that way it stayed put and wasn't moving all over while working and pouring. I never did see any sense in the twisty tire wires what the heck is that going to hold ? I don't even mess with it in my floors and have never had a problem. A good 4" with fiber is all my concrete guy recommends unless you are really running heavy equipment over it.One thing often overlooked is the more uniform thickness that is maintained it helps make it stronger too.

Mike M.: No way of sandblasting that much steel in a residential neighborhood, and no power at the jobsite. Any I've done before was with a wire cup brush. A $15 brush only lasts for 5 20' lenghts and takes about 15 minutes each. I gets expensive to save money.

Mike, I resectfuly disagree with the fiber mesh issue. It is considered a secondary reinforcment where as rebar is primary. And I hope I said that in a polite way by all account. In our area we have alot of frost that heaves concrete up in the cold weather. That said if it would heave it all together no problem, but not to often the case. Many contractors like the mesh as it means a whole lot of less effort and time. But if you look at their own sidewalks, garages and pours they have the rebar in place when pouring. The bottom line is price and or a big work schedule, not usualy the customers best intrest at stake. I have always been very bullheaded and do it right or get someone else to do it attatude. In the end the last few years it may not be the best policy as younger generation folks including the bankers and finance people have little respect for quality. The main mindset today is rather cost per square foot, thus we have lost alot of jobs. However we do get alot of redo jobs. Infact this Wed. I was asked how to fix a garage floor that would not drain, a leaking foundation, a cracked sidewalk approx. thirty five food long 1/2 inch crack the total distance, a garage footing that had to be ground down as the frost heaved it, A house foundation that has a crooked exposed wall where the forms gave way. (all the same house) This house is four years old, and their out of pocket cost $187,000 without any of their own escavation, shrubs, painting , cleanup etc. Nor or lot it sits on figured in this. That is big dollars in our area, and I have no idea how to fix any of these items without tearing out the old and starting over. Like I told my son who asked me to talk to the home owner, I'm pretty sure it is not the poor quality concrete that is reflected here. Yea I do have better things to do than rant on this puter, and agin i'm sorry I do not mean to offend anyones opinion. Dave NE IA

I don't even see this as an agree or disagree situation as there are several ways to do concrete some better for other situations than others etc. And concrete comes with only 1 guarentee-- IT WILL CRACK !

I would grab rhw rebar. lay it out and wire as needed. Then pour the floor. 6" of 4000 psi concrete will take just about anything any of us can dish out. I had the plasma shop floor poured last summer like this with no rebar what so ever, just the fibered concrete. My Deere 310A backhoe has been on it alot (7 tons) and you can't tell.
Unless your building or repairing locomotives, a lot of un-needed expense can be saved.

I may be wrong, but I always thought that welding low-carbon rebar was permitted as long as it followed AWS standards ( see American Welding Society, D1.4-98 Welding Reinforcing Steel). I don't believe there are even any pre-heat requirements on bar up to #11 with a CE (carbon equivalent) of 40 or less.

I think the reason that you don't see that often on job sites is that it requires a whole additional level of skilled labor. Certified welders, supervisors, and inspectors all quickly add up in dollars.

I will say that tack welding is not permitted as a substitute for wire ties.

I have seen columns of welded rebar at a light rail jobsite. At least I think they were welded. I can't imagine them being held together with wire ties. From the street they looked pretty rusty. Size was about 24" diameter by 10 or 12' long. They were there for a few months and then dissapeared.

Just saw your later post regarding butt welding. If your inspector does'nt allow that, look into rebar couplers. Just a sleeve, about 4-5" long, sized for the bar, with set screws.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the total strength of a steel structure comes from the steel. All those concrete floors and columns actually don"t add much strength in themselves - the use of concrete is mostly just to keep the steel from flexing.

Welding rebar is a no-no! Those bars you are getting for $1 each are worth more like $5 to $6 each. Lapping the bars and wire tie is the best you can do. I have seen plenty of people try welding rebar with less than desirable results. It will hold well enough to place it and get the concrete over it, but it will have no structural value. It becomes very brittle almost like cast iron when welded and will break under minimal loads.

Don't be a slowpolk and let a deal like that get away. They make twistey wires that are short chunks of soft wire with eyes on both ends. You simply take a three to five dollar twistey tool and hook the eyes and crank it --very fast and very inexpensive. Not even a question about it as far as i'm conserened. Dave NE IA

The International Building Codes specifically forbid the welding of rebar that will be used in concrete work. I was told this by my very knowlegable and reliable contractor, I have not seen it in writiing first hand. I also have heard this from others, so I believe it to be correct.

Overlap it and wire it together.

Hi Slowpoke,

Rebar in forms is usually wired together, so welding should be excellent---overkill even.

I've read that rusted rebar is better than bright because surface rust gives the metal more "tooth" to be held firmly in the concrete. Flaking rust, or enough rust to weaken the metal is another matter, of course.

Welding ruins the strength of the rebar, and when using wire, any laps should be 18" on each piece inorder for the load to transfer---having said all that it really depends upon the ultimate use of the concrete. Building a floor slab or a bridge and/or is human life involved. Rust don't hurt-but knock the loose stuff off. No oil or grease on the rebar. Engineering is what I do.
