Im just learning how to weld, and as part of a class we need to fabricate an 8 in by 12 in box beam using 1/2 in steel plates.

A full penetration weld is desired and so is a good root profile.

The trick is, that the small dimensions of the beam would most likely not allow you to weld on the inside, because all welds have to be similar.

Im not even sure where to begin. So far Ive only worked with stick, and I believe that or MIG would be ok. Im not worried so much about actual fabrication as i am designing it. Also, would just a fillet weld work, or probably not if i cant weld from the inside?

This is all so new to me. But i have to admit, the first time i got to try making a weld, i felt so cool.

Layout your plate sizes to allow corner welds. In other words, cut the plates 11" on the tall side and 7" on the short side. It wouldn't hurt to set up a jig with some 2x2 angle to form the box dimensions, align two sides, square them up and tack weld every 12" or so. Install a temporary diagonal across the ends to hold squareness. Then repeat the procedure for the other two pieces. Tack weld the corner joint and brace as before. Now align the two halves to form the box, tack weld along the two joints and again install a temp diagonal brace across the ends to tie in all four plates. Once the assembly is well jigged/braced, run a hot root pass for six inches or so, being careful to spread out the heat with a controlled sequence. Start at the center and work outward and only weld a short distance on each corner. I think we used to call it step welding. Alternate the root passes to opposite corners and switch sides also--the other side of the center. Once you're done with all corners having a good root pass, needle-gun/chip the weld (assuming stick welding) and prep for the caps. Run your caps similar to the root passes as needed for the weld size needed. By controlling the heat input you can reduce or prevent distortion. If you don't watch the heat, the beam will look like a big steel banana when you get done with the welding. I don't know how long your beam has to be, but you can look in a good welding handbook about weld sequencing techniques--which get a little busy to explain.
