I can't decide between a bandsaw or a power hacksaw for my shop. I currently use a chopsaw, but the dust/sparks etc. are making it unplesant to work with. I also need a machine capable of cuttting 6x6 square steel tubing for an upcoming project. Most of the work that it will be expected to do involves lighter material. Any idea which machine would be better?

I share the same dilemna. A horizontal has no length limitation and makes straighter cuts, but a vertical can be used to cut shapes when necessary, and takes up less space. What I would like is an industrial quality combination horizontal/vertical, but have never seen one other than the homeowner quality combos that are not rugged enough for serious metal cutting.

RickL, Do you have any more information about Ellis? I Googled it and didn't come up with any equipment manufacturers.

Fein make a good power hacksaw. Available in pneumatic and electric. Ive used one before, never owned one and it cut well. If it as good of a tool as the multimaster, it will be well worth the money.good luck

Been ther done that with the chop saws. I know have a bandsaw one of best things in the shop. Ellis dry cut style is what I have and love it.12x12 max cut swing head for angle etc. Blades last me around two years. Simply loved it. Plasma cutters are nice ( I just sold mine couple months ago) but no way do they replace a band saw.

Have you tried a plasma cutter? I don't own one but I learned to use one in a welding class. I was impressed. Clean cuts and you can make patterns from cardboard or plywood, lay pattern on steel and cut.

A bandsaw is about the best investment you can make for a shop tool. I have used my little cheapie Northern bandsaw for just about everything you can imagine, from cutting angle iron to cutting elect conduit to cutting large size pvc pipe. Bandsaw hands down.

I think power hacksaws are about obsolete. Have you found a source for replacement blades?
