I have a 5 hp BLACK MAX 220 volt. It's very sluggish at first start up. I'm gonna change oil and see if that helps. Anybody know what type (wt) oil I should put back in it ?? It's only like 40-ish degrees around here.(southwest Tn.) Whatcha think??

This happens even with no pressure in the tank. I'm pretty sure the oil is thicker than it shoud be.(hope so anyway). I bought the compressor used so naturally...there was no owners manuel with it. Thanks for your suggestions...are you saying that regular engine oil isn't recommended ..such as 10/30..I've got some of that !! Thanks.

The correct answer of course, is whatever the owners manual for the compressor says to use.

That being said, most new compressors call for the use of synthetic motor oils for pump use, some such as IR have their own oil they recommend. My Husky requires the use of Mobil I (don't recall the weight) for it. I am using Mobil I and when the warranty ends will switch to AMSoil as I am a dealer for that oil and prefer to use it.

You will not have any starting problems with synthetic oils, but at 40 degrees, you should not really be seeing any problems anyhow. Is the head pressure relieving properly after shutdown? If it is not, the pump is starting againist a load and this could be your problem. Might be that in cold weather the valve that relieves the head pressure at shutdown (which is intergrated with your pressure switch) is sticking. A few compressors use other schemes to relieve head pressure but most use the pressure switch to do it.
