I'm fixin' to paint the fenders off my '74 Ford 2000. Picked up the proper Gloss Gray at the NH dealer and called the auto body supply house to get some enamel reducer. The gent there told me that EPA regs have all but eliminated use of enamel reducer and he had none in stock. Shopped the local hardware and spotted Xylol - listed as a medium to fast drying enamel reducer. Anyone had experience using Xylol to reduce enamel for spraying? reuslts? Thanx.

If you are talking about the synthetic enamal reducer, it is a thing of the past.

If you are talking about acrylic enamel, it is still available, but who knows for how much longer. DuPont is thinking about dicontinuing it. I am sure it is because acrylic enamel reducer is cheaper than the other paints and such that are available now and they can't make as much money off of it. And a little help from our friends at the EPA won't hurt either will it?

Hi Ken, If Xylol is what I'm thinking it is than it evaporates way too fast for what you're doing. Enamel reducer is readily available from industrial and automtive paint supply stores. If you can determine what type of enamel(alkyd, acrylic, etc.) you have, it will help the counter man determine which reducer would best suit your needs. Good luck...Al English
