110 verse 220 electric usage

A few weeks age a discussion about air compressors come up using 110 or 220. I always thought 220 used half as much current as 110. I'm no electrician so I may not repeat correct what was said. 110 uses 2 times the amps. Electricity is sold by the watt. Amp X volt= watt. so therefore a compressor used the same $ worth of electricity where it be running on 110 or 220. Did I understand that right. If so will that hold true with air conditioner. Of course I wouldn't have the choice to use a air conditioner on either 110 or 220. I have to make the choice and buy it one way or the other. for example, if I decide on a 17,500 BTU ac, what might be the difference in cost to operate it on 110 verse 220.

I hope my question is clearer than mud.

For all the reasons stated, 240v will run smoother with less heat buildup through the wires and windings, meaning less parasitic power loss and less danger of overheating anything. So, it should be fractionally cheaper to run.

220 volts AC hands down, they just plain work better for the buck. They will also run less because of the size you can get with 220 over what you can get in 110 units.

Yes, you've got it correct. Although most electricians seem to agree that the same motor running on 220 will sound smoother and last longer than if it's on 110.

It's all about VD. To avoid VD and losses from I2R in the wiring. It takes larger copper and/or lower current? The motor will start easier and cause less diming of lights on 240. All said if you have the choice of low or high voltage connections. A person is crazy to use 120 where 240 can be used.

Wow! buickanddeere actually got the math right, actually no BS he is right along with the other posters here. Running 240V over 120v is going to make for less I/R loss through the wiring meaning you will have more current available for motor starting and less eddy losses inside the motor itself due to the slight mismatches in coil windings. As for heating devices it means slightly faster warm-up due to less current loss in the wiring and a more even balance of current across your KW/Hr meter.
