Need a new chainsaw

My Poulan Pro finally bit the dust today, looks like I'll be shopping for a new chainsaw tomorrow. I want to go with a Stihl as the local hardware store carries and services them. Question: should I go with the Farmboss or Woodboss? Whats the difference? I will be cutting about 2-3 cords per year, so I don't need a pro style, but I want a good saw that will be around awhile.

Picked up a Stihl about a year ago. Don't know the model number or cc off the top of my head, but has a 24" bar, and it's in Indiana settin next to the Lombards, I'm in Illinois. Is a nice saw. Is a very, very high RPM operation before touch a tree though. Doesn't like lower or middle range (getting bogged down). Old Lombards don't care, can take off from a good bogdown so longs as the chain's sharp and oiled. That Stihl has to be cranked up and don't let off unto the cut's complete (oak). Once it's cranked up though, sure will cut a lot faster than them Lombards. Is a whole lot lighter too.

Dealer took me out back and showed and told me what he said was required to do as a dealer, even the part in the manual that says to use "bio" bar oil since is made in Germany and must be environmentally friendly. But he told me off the cuff, never ever use the bio stuff the manual says to because will gum up the oilers real bad. I've been using the bar oil I've always used, no problems.

I owned a Stihl with two other guys and we had to retire it after 25 years because parts were getting htwo years ago and have been very happy with it.

I cut about 6-9 cord of wood each year, for our home and hunting camps. I own 2 Stihl saws and one Husky all about the same size and cc's. I will grab the Husky everytime. The only reason is that the husky weighs alot less and you do not get pooped out as fast. The Stihl is a good saw and I would buy another if they were a little lighter. I have had my Husky Rancher for about 8 years and have not done a thing to it. When I let my buddies use my saws they always grab the Husky. My .002

All I can say is, Dad runs Poulan Pro's. He cuts quite a bit of wood, as he heats the old farmhouse with a woodburning furnace. I have a Stihl Farmboss, and don't cut much wood except for my own fireplace. Everytime I go home and help dad, he gives me a hard time for spending more money on the Stihl, but asks me to leave the saw for him to use!

I used to work at a dealership where we sold Echo and Stihl and serviced everything else dragged through the door. The Stihl would be the way to go. If you are just looking to cut up firewood look for an 026, or even the 024 wood boss, you can"t go wrong. If you need to do heavier cutting like felling small to medium size trees try to get yourself an 034 Farm Boss. Its been a while since I worked there and I"m not sure if these models are still available but you can ask the salesman what the equivalent saw would be. Oh, in case your wondering, Stihl"s numbering system used to work like this. Even numbered saws were commercial grade and odd numbered saws were considerd homeowner grade. There were some differences but even an odd numbered Stihl was alot more saw then anything you could get at any of the big box stores. Happy shopping.

I have an 026 I bought over 16 years ago, it runs great. The only thing I've ever done to it besides a spark plug is the clutch, which I replaced last year after loaning it to an idiot friend of my wife.

Three year ago I bought a farm boss and am very happy with it also. I was surprised how cheap it was to purchase. I think it was right around $300. Makes me wonder why people will buy a crappy saw for $200. Anyway, the first time I had my farm boss out, a log rolled on it and cracked the fuel tank. A little JB Weld and it's been fine ever since.

Dug, I would buy another Poulan (How many Poulans can you buy for the price of a Sihl ??)or a used saw for $100.00 and throw away when it expires

My neighbor went thru 3 new saws.My Stihl O23 is still running.I have cut far more wood than he did.My saw has used a few chains, 2 bars and one fuel line.Tree men and loggers all use Stihl saws here

I can buy 2 Poulans for the price of 1 Stihl (chicked out the Poulans while looking at the Stihls). My Poulan lasted 3 years, so...I figure with the reputation of Stihls lasting 10, 15 years and longer, it makes sense to splurge now and have save money over the long run.

Besides, I like the color of the Stihl! ; -)

Hey Dug, never fails, somebody wants a saw to cut a bit of wood for the fireplace and $600 saws are mentioned, lol.Farm boss is model 290 56CC saw that has been built a long time with a very good reputaion. Wood Boss is model 270 50CC, not 260 which is a pro grade saw. 270 is a newer design with a very narrow housing. I like the feel of a 270 in my hands but have never run one. I have run a 290 and it will do what you want in fine style, but then Id bet a 270 will do so also.

I bought my 028 Wood Boss about 25 years ago. Had to replace a few parts after an idiot ran over it - twice! Naw, I wasn"t the idiot. It still cuts better than any of my neighbors saws.

I had a Stihl 029 was a darn good saw. I cut about 300 cords of wood a year. When the 029 gave up I went right out and bought a ms 290, wasn't near the saw. I ended up swaping it for a 260 seems similar to the old 29.

No doubt you've noticed that the "Farm Boss" (MS290, nee 029) is quite a bit cheaper than the "Wood Boss" (MS260/026). The MS260 is more of a professional grade saw. Both have the same power, but the MS260 is about three pounds lighter. I've had an 029 for several years, and it's been a good saw. But if I were to buy another one, it would be the MS260 or possibly the MS360.

I have had an 036 with a 20 in. bar for 7-8 years. It has been a good one. I replaced the original bar after about 5 years and only chains as needed. I probably cut 5 to 10 cords per year.

Ive got two stihls, farm boss and the ranch boss. I dont know if the ranch boss is still available, but I would say get the farmboss.
Mine get used pretty hard when their out and havent had any problems at all other than normal wear on the bars and chains

Well Dug, as far as I am concerned you are headed in the right direction, going for a Stihl. I have an 026 that I inherited from my Dad that is at least 15 years old. I have had it serviced a couple of times and it still cuts good. Replaced bar and chains a few times, just normal wear and cutting trees in old fence rows with wire in them. I would like a bigger saw sometimes, but can't justify spending $$$ for another one. I have a dealer right in town (3 miles) so I can get parts/service real easy.
