I got a set of hollow punches off eBay that have served me well making gaskets. When they are sharp they should cut through even tough material like leather.

Use spent rifle or pistol shells. They come in a lot of different diameters and work great. It takes a little while to get a good selection, but they will last a long time.

Most tool supply stores (SEARS)sells them by the set, like drill bits....just place the punch where you want the hole tap with hammer..... .you got it....they dont cost much $$$

Use a ball bearing , as long as it is bigger than the hole. push it down a bit in to the gasket over the hole so it stays ,give it a rap with the hammer and you have a perfect fitting hole. it is all I use. No need for all them dif size punches

Assuming the part is cast iron or steel (and not aluminum), a small ball peen hammer is all you need. You do need to punch a couple of holes to start, use whatever you have (knife, leather punch, etc.) Then secure your gasket material to the part with a couple of bolts and start tapping. Perfect gasket every time.

I often used to make gaskets for heavy machinery at work. We had the gasket punches, but nobody used them. It was much quicker/easier to use the drill press with the appropriate drill bit, put a block of wood underneath. Also, we didn't use the gasket cutters... electric or air sheet metal nibblers worked much better.

Lay the gasket material on the surface you need the gasket for and peck the holes out with the round side of a ball pean hammer

I'm not an "old timer" but have made more than a few gaskets with a small ball peen (aka gasket) hammer.

Yeah, a ball pein or the right size (bigger than the hole) ball bearing and any old hammer.

Yep, bearing balls work good. Got a drawer full of different sizes. I've used those gasket punches too--found out they work good in the drill press on slow speed for certain things. A little lubricant on the tip, soft wood underneath and no damage to the punch from hitting it too hard.

Get a ball bearing (oversize from the hole you want) and put the gasket over the hole and use the ball bearing and a hammer to tap hole threw the gasket, it works very well, you will need an exacto blade for cleanup. Have fun.

I just use a pipe sharpened to about a 45 degree angle on the belt sander. Use a block and sharpen if necessary.

Bought 2 sets of hollow punches off fleabay. These punch 1/8" to 3/4" Made in China but 6 bucks each set and 5 bucks shipping. Looked at a set of Greenlee hollow punches 87 bucks. The cheap Chinese punches have done all I need to do.

Hey! That's just like the sets I bought! Would have perfered American made, but couldn't justify the cost, 6 bucks new vs. 87 bucks.

Buck: You can buy special gasket punches, but many times it works well to use old cartridge cases--a 1/4" bolt hole would be a bit larger than .25 inches, so a .270, 30-06, 30-30 or similar should be just about right. Sharpen the edge a bit on a belt sander, use a wooden backing block so you don"t roll the edge over, and you should be good to go.

No problem--lots of guys have brass around, and so you don"t usually have to look far to find a lifetime supply of punch cutters--at least in the smaller sizes. .38/.357 cases work great for 3/8" bolts, and .45 ACP works good for 7/16". On holes much larger than that, it"s usually quick work to sharpen the edge of an appropriately-sized chunk of pipe and punch away.

Ah, come on, the ones with the primer left in them solve the problem of how to dig the punched pieces out when they get built up inside...LOL
