would it be bad to start the motor of the pressure washer without water in the pump?

Most of those waterpumps use a rubber seal over a piston to pump water. No water, no lubrication.Burns up the rubber seal. same as running an outboard motor without water hooked up. Ruins the pump in less than a Minute.

I even make sure there are no bubbles coming out of the nozzle,before I will start mine... That way I know it does not have any air lock in the pump... Also, after I shut it down, I let water run out of the nozzle for a few minutes to cool the pump.

come on jay you have to be smarter than that , no it will not hurt motor but it can destroy thre pump from cavatavion and parts are not cheap I know bacause my job is to keep and maintain 15 cat pressure pumps

well what exactly will break? I mean the water isnt a lubercation..you can run a water pump without water and it wont break, I have had a Submersible pump run for hrs without water and still runs fine....I have had the power steering pump in my car run for hrs without oil, cause of a broken line, once I repaired the line, it still works fine...

The pressure pumps are different the pistons are similar to a small engine and water is what lubes them so in other words running a power washer with out water is like running your car with out oil .it"s your do what you want .

Most of the ones I have seen or had say never to run them with out water. It would sort of be like running a hyd pump with out hyd fluid. You would probably hurt the pump very fast if you did run it when dry.
