Mis-firing F-150

Awhile back i posted about my 89' F-150 with the 5.0 FI engine and it's nasty habit of mis-firing at speed. Everybody had helpful suggestions and they are appreciated. I've replaced the plugs with new and the distributor cap and rotor (with real good ones, brass electrodes) and tested all the plug cables. The problem seems to be the worst at cruising speed on the 4 lane, the engine's running about 2,000 RPM. It almost acts like this ignition is running in a retarded position. The distributor has no advance mechanisms that I can see, so I'm just guessing it's computor controlled. How does the spark advance on one of these type engines? What might I check to see if it is working correctly?

I would install NEW plug wires to start off. Even though you say you tested them , they usually breakdown when under load , making them pretty hard to acuratly test . Next I'd take good look at the Throttle sensor. I have replaced a ton of these in my shop . You can sweep test them with an older anolog ohm meter , should be smooth with not glitches . I have yet to see Egr sensor cause much of a miss condition . Also fuel injectors get dirty or plug up on these quite often , a good Injector service such as "MotorVac" couldn't hurt .

Steve, The spark advance is controlled by the TFI module(ign. module).Usually, when they go bad,there's a no start condition.Sounds to me like your EGR position sensor is bad.It's located on top of the EGR valve.This sensor makes the engine buck like crazy when bad.Let me know.~brad

I had to replace the TFI module 2 years ago. The truck dropped dead in the middle of North Main street in town. Old Ray had to drag my butt home. Truck ran like new with the new module, then anyway.
I'll check into the EGR positioner thing. The engine doesn't really buck but there is a definent
misfire or stumble to the engine at speed.

Steve,
I shouldn't have said bucked like crazy,but definitely surging especially at road speeds.Also,I thought of another thing,unplug the throttle position sensor(at bottom of throttle-body)and check for anti-freeze contamination inside electrical plug.There's a coolant passage going through the throttle-body,and a plug sometimes leaks and coolant runs down the throttle shaft right into the TPS.I forgot to tell ya that the EGR pos. sensor is about 30 bucks.Get a good one like Echlin at Napa.Not Auto Zone!They have good brakes etc.,but electrical stuff not too good.~brad

Thanks for the help. I'm kinda lost on these Fords. I've always had GMs. Not much goe's wrong with them that I can't figger out. Fords are a different animal for me.
