Sears has them if you order. Go to the flea market and dig through the boxes of tools. I have found all kinds of neat stuff! Jeffcat

i have a snap on set, 1/4 inch to 1 inch. most square pipe plugs are messed up from years of vise grip or cresent wrench use, and 12 points wont work, so my 8 points are indespensable. someones always borrowing them.

Proto makes them for use with square headed bolts. They come in four point and eight point, and will work better than a 12 point socket when extra torque is needed, since a 12 point only grips by the corners and can strip fairly easy. Many industrial suppliers sell them, e.g. MSC Industrial at: Link Look in their on-line catalog for specialty sockets for square nuts. Most are their page 2144 You can type in part # 85203404 to bring one of them up.

As Nebraska says the 12 point sockets work just fine. If you look at a 12 point socket you can see how it als has a square in side so it fits like a glove on both square or hex nuts.

I don"t think you"ll find any 12 point socket that will hold very well when applying any significant torque to a square nut or bolt. Just my $.02!

Regular 12 point sockets work fine.

I have a set of eight sided sockets that go up to 1/2 inch in diameter. I don't know if they make bigger ones or not, but I got them from Sears and I use them for set screws and air brake slack adjusters at my job.

I have accumulated quite a variety of these over the years; some are square but most are 8 sided. I have 1/4" up thru 1". I used to collect them mainly for oil fill/drain plugs and for lag bolts. Most lag bolts come with a hex head nowadays.
