Starting capacitor--what size?

My late Father-in-Law had an air compressor(home built) in his workshop. Last weekend when I was there I checked it out to see if it would run. The starting capacitor is missing. Everything else looks OK. The compressor is twin cyl. The motor is a 110 volt, 2hp., and draws 19 amps. 1700 rpm. The guys (kids) at our only two part sources around here don"t know "nuthin" bout nuthin" (surprise). Anybody want to clue me in as to what size capacitor I would need? Thanks in advance, I"m sure you guys will come thru" again!...Frank

A lot depends may not need a cap. What happen to the old capacitor if it had one. If it did have a cap then it will be high probably over 100mfd. See site below for some good information and make sure you really need a cap.

Hi T-Bone, I do vaguely recall him saying something about the "starting capacitor might be getting bad." some time ago. Probably why it wasn"t even there. I have replaced the one on my pump moter twice. I know that they have to be close in size but there is a range that will work if you stay within it.

Hi Frank,

The point I'm trying to make is without other start componets installed then this motor could very well require a run capacitor and not a start cap.

Two entirely different capacitors that accomplish different tasks.

Yes, I do know there are differences. This compressor did used to run, and it used a capacitor on top of the motor housing that was housed in it's own tin cylindrical housing that hooked to two wire leads with spade connectors. It was brown plastic, about five inches long. Since it is an air compressor motor, it cycles quite often. Do you still think I should be checking for a run capacitor? If so, then I will talk to an electrician.

Try an appliance parts shop for larger AC type caps, yours should be around 150 or so microfarad at 600 volts AC and even the 150 might be a bit small.

You need to go to a shop that sells and rebuilds electric motors and give them the details about the motor. Definitely not to a place like Radio Shack. The last motor capacitor I got was around $7 or $8.
