Got a homelite super 240 chain saw that won"t start. If I give her a shot of gas down the carb she fires right up so I suspect carb problem or filter. Any ideas? This saw is about six years old and has seen no use for the last four years. Thanks

Are you trying to start it with gas left in the tank? If so dump it. Other than that, first make sure that the fuel suction hose is in good condition and the hose to the carb is OK too, this has been a big problem on saws since the advent of blended fuels. If like most saws you take the cap off and fish the strainer and hose to the hole with a wire. Clean the strainer and if the hose is deteriated it will be obvious, cracked or gummey feeling hoses dont work. The other end of the hose will go to a bulkhead fitting in the wall of the tank and on the other side will be a hose to the carb, same deal, cracked or gummy = pitch. Once these things have been checked out and OK starting the saw by priming it as you have been will sometimes work the sludge out of the carb and it will start pumping and running on it"s own. If you have already primed it 5-6 times and it doesnt run then forget it and remove the carb. They are very simple to reseal if you pay atenion at all when taking it appart. Biggest mistake most make is putting the gaskets on the wrong side of the valves or diaphram and they no worky that way. Th ecarb will be marked for for MFG and model numbers. If you have a decent saw or small engine shop near you they can get a carb kit for any saw. If not type the numbers and name in on Google search for a couple hundred places that sell the kits on-line.

I took it apart, everything looked like new, put it back together and it still wouldn't start. I should have soaked the carb but I didn't. I then got it to fire then kept it running by fliping the choke on and off for ten minutes or so untill it would run on its own. Even then it wouldn't idle but I kept running it for about fifteen minutes at medium to full speed then it started working like new. This saw is like new and likely had less than three hours total run time on it. Anyway, it now runs like a top! Thanks for your help
