The other day I was in the auto parts store picking up a tranny filter for my 1996 Dodge Caravan. The parts guy said did I need any tranny fluid? I said no I have plenty of Dextron III at home. Then he said you shouldn't be using Dextron III in a Dodge of that year or newer. He said that it will just leak right out of the tranny and cause it to slip. He said I should be using something called "Chrysler Plus" fluid. Now I'm starting to worry since I also have a 1997 Dodge Ram truck and a 1997 Dodge Stratus. I had never heard of this. Is he full of .... and just trying to sell me something? Opinions?

Lots of companies sell +3, and you can buy it at Walmart for pretty cheap. +4 is synthetic, and if your vehicle requires it, you should stay with synthetic to prevent convertor shudder. There are some acceptable alternatives other than mopar. Pennzoil's multi-vehicle ATF, Red Line's c+, and probably others.

Fluid spec izz stamped rite on the dip stick, pull it and read it. Do not use type 4 were it requires type 3 unless the dealer has a spec sheet and they do that shows you kin interchange the 2 types. Ask the parts department for a copy of the spec sheet. Take you Vin # with ya.

ATF+4 directly replaces ATF+3 in all applications. ATF+3 is still available and can still be used where it is called for though too.

Ok i have the Lubricant cross reference chart from Mopar and it stats pre 2000, chry. T/C, dodge caravan, ply voyager use type 3. I have installed chry remans in'em and it clearly stated to use only type 3, I call their tech line and git the right fluid recommendation on the fluid type to use with enny trans i install from them. I really do not care what he puts in it but if the type 3 has werked for this long then why chance it. If you know of a chry tech bulletin that states its ok to use the 4 here I would like to have the # to file with the chart I have. The next trip to the dealer I will git a new print out for my records this one izz dated 07/03

I would recommend having your transmission flushed if you have already filled it with something other than ATF+ fluid and then change the filter. When you drop the pan and change the filter, you"re only really changing 4.5-6 quarts of ATF, or less than half of what"s in the transmission. A flush machine will connect in series with your transmission oil cooler line, new fluid goes in one side as the old fluid comes out into the machine from the other connection. You can do up to 16 quarts depending on what machine your repair facility has. Because of the viscosity differences in transmisssion fluids, you would have shift quality problems, and possibly some shuddering with the wrong fluid. Damaging the seals causing fluid leaks would probably only happen if you overfilled it. A trans flush usually runs around a $100, not cheap but, compare the flush price to the price tag for a new or rebuilt electronically controlled transmission. The owner"s manual is your friend especially the servive interval, recommended fluids and bulb sections. We won"t discuss what problems putting the wrong type of bulb somewhere can cause.

DO NOT USE MERCON/DEXTRONIII!!! ATF +4 came out around 2001 part number 5013457aa for a quart or 5013458aa for a gallon. i replaces ATF +3 and all other previous. ATF +4 is only available at the dealer but afternarket suppliers have the ATF +3 and an additive to bring the +3 up to +4 standards. being your van is a '96 you can use the ATF +3 and be fine.

Hey CEB,
Here"s how we approach it in our shop.
Parts man is right that it takes +4, we call it 7176 fluid. Parts man is wrong that it will make it start hemmoraging oil. Usually what you"ll get is shift concerns (rough, shudder, soft or harsh). Most specialized ATFs start out as dexron 3. Each manufacturer adds their own friction modifiers to it from there to make it special. There is a product out there called Lubeguard. They make different friction modifiers that meet or exceed factory specs, and are OEM endorsed. Adding a bottle of this will bring it up to par with Chrysler specs.
It comes in one pint bottles and you add it 1 pint to 10 qts of dexron 3. So for your caravan one bottle will be about right. Most NAPA stores carry it, and the bottles tell you which fluids their for. 7176 wiil be in a black bottle with a red cap. In a transmission shop like ours, it saves us having to carry many different types of fluid. Hope this helps Brokenwrench

DO NOT USE DEXTRON. Read your owners manual or call the dealership. I have a 99 Caravan and the owner's manual specifically says to use Plus 3. I just had the fluid changed and I specified that Plus 3 be used.

The electronic transmissions will be damage with any other fluid.

Short answer, don't screw around with 2000 transmission. Use what the manufacturer calls for.

Now who would you rather believe, the owner's manual, or Uncle Snot, whose Grandfather Goob, never having learned to read, had no use for those danged owner's manuals always telling you what to do to your gasoline buggy, and he always used turkey grease in his Dodge automatics right up to his dying day. I think Uncle Snot would tell you to use whatever is the cheapest.

Lost the transmission in my RAM 1500 at 43K. A transmission man who I trust said he would recomend sticking with Chrysler trani fluid.

Just remembered something from when I had my 1991 pickup. That used plus 3. I believe the the plus 4 fluid replaces it, but you might want to check with a dealer on that.

I"m no expert on this, but I believe Dodge / Chrysler over drive transmissions have been using plus 4 for the past 10 years or so.

I don"t know about the leaking out part, never heard of that. But I have heard the Dexron 3 will cause it to slip, and could cause other internal damage.

Someone told me the plus 4 is better at handling the higher heat due to the overdrive, and has special additives for it.

Check your owners manual, should say in there what the correct fluid is. Or call your local dealer, and ask to speak to someone in the shop.

I used the Plus 4 in my 1991 dodge pickup, and my 2001 dodge pickup. Never had any transmission troubles with either of them.
