I bought a Harbor Fright 1/4" socket set for occational use. When I have needed to use it, the junk ratchet handle is very imprecise and jerky, but the rest of the set seems ok. What brand of 1/4" ratchet handle would you suggest from your experience? (That would work smoothly) Thanks John L.

Check Sears web site for a Craftsman 14 pc 1/4" socket set with ratchet on sale for less than $9..."while quantities last". If you don't have a Sears near you you may have to pay some shipping.
I have a couple of close stores but only one of them had them in stock.

I have a home depot HUSKY ratchet. Its a teardrop style head. The same ratchet is now being sold at walmart under the Stanley name. Same qualiy as my usa made one, but now made in tiwan. I have several other ratchets, but this is my favorite. Im not sure if its made in 1/4, but I think it would be. In 1/4" drive I have a 1/4 SK and craftsman 1/4 drive ratchets. I like the sk, hate the craftsman. Its bulky and there are big gaps between the clicks.

I have several of the older fine tooth ratchets, that I really like. They seem to be made just alike, SK & Blackhawk. I do not think Blackhawk is made anymore. It is hard to top an S-K.. I was looking at some of the better Chinese ratchets, at a store recently. As much as I hate to admit it, they seemed to be well made, & felt like the ratchet action was good. I hope my good old American tools last me through the rest of my life...

I like sk myself. I have my fathers set from back in the 50's. 1/2 in drive though. That ratchet has seen a pipe on the end of it a few times. It has never broke. Now i have sk all sizes and the combination wrenchs. Snap-on is nice but a bit too hard on the wallet.

I've got a Snap-On 1/4" set, and have always found that the little "shift lever" on the ratchet is too easy to bump with your thumb when working.
My other set is a Husky (S-K ?), and I like the ratchet better.

I tried some Gear Ratchets and Gear Wrenches from NAPA (promoted on Nascar races) and so far I like them but the carrying cases could be better.

I only use Craftsman tools. Easily replaced if they break at any Sears. Not the high price of Snap-on either.

Every month or two Sears has a Craftsman 1/4" set on sale for $10 or $12 with a ratchet, 8 or 10 regular sockets, and 3 or 4 deep well. A Sears ratchet purchased by it's self is more than that. If you get a Sunday paper, check the Sears flyer.

I got some nice 3/8" ratchets at Menard's identical to what is sold with a Stanley stamp for $6. They seem to work well and are smooth. The Stanley 3/8" ratchets usually go for at least $14.
