I have a casting which has 4 bolt holes with stripped threads....How do I fix this problem? Going to a larger size bolt is not an option in this case. Thanks.

What size threaded hole are we talking? Is there room in the casting to drill the old holes out? If so, you can get what are called Keen-Inserts which are small inserts threaded inside and out. The inside will be the thread size you need, and the outside will be a larger diameter. After you drill and tap the stripped holes, screw in the inserts which can then be locked in place. I have used these many times in my trade as a toolmaker, but do not know where you might purchase them. Must be available someplace. Hope this helps.

Heli-coils are your best bet and are available at most auto parts store and by mailorder at McMaster.com

My brother had the same problem. Heli coils are the way to go. Machinest told me that heli coils are stonger and hold better than new/original threads.

The most popular type is a Heli-Coil. It's a little stainless spring thing that screws into your stripped hole--once you've drilled and tapped it. Worked great for me in my aluminum chainsaw. It would be even better in cast iron.

Keen inserts and others of that type require a larger hole to be drilled than do the Helicoils. Both have important uses. Your comments indicate that the larger hole will be a problem. Sounds like the Helicoils will be best for this repair. Incidentially, follow the Helicoil instructions rather than those of a local "expert". First time I used Helicoils, the instructions said one thing and the "expert" said another. "Expert" had me drill a hole too large for the Helicoil, so I had to go with the "Keen" style. Read and follow the instructions.
