I have a long time friend who has a 1936 Cat crawler. Some time back an 8' blade and hydraulics for the blade were added. The diesel engine has new injectors and the pony motor and the diesel start and run good. The under carriage is 80%. The cylinders need rebuilt as they leak pretty bad. He realizes that it is probably worth more with the blade and cylinders removed. It has been setting in a back room in their family owned job shop for as many years as I can remember and it looks like it just came out of the box to me. It belonged to his father. He asked me to try and find out what it might be worth if he was to sell it. I couldn't think of a better place to get some honest answers than this forum. What do you guys think?

T_Bone's right. I found a '38 D6 in Va that I passed on, but a buddy paid $1000 for. Not as good condition. That 8' blade indicates a good sized machine.

Parts are a major problem. I found a parts manual on ebay but he's mostly machining what he needs. Retired machinist who's made my life considerably easier. Same guy paid $1000 for a little Case basket case that I would have been looking to BE paid to haul it off! Cat's bad about parts for even my 35 year old 933. When you get much below $15,000 around here, you have an oddity or a toy.

Unsolicited advice for T_Bone, unless you're only moving cactus, get a deuce and a half to pull around a real tractor. :) Weight's everything.

I was over there today to advise on arc spraying a worn thrust bearing fit on an old crank shaft and to suggest a filler metal and procedure for repairing a fuel tank from an antique airplane restoration.

While I was there we went back and looked at the crawler again. It's dirty from sitting back there uncovered but other than that it really looks good. He said it was not quite a year since they had it started. I'd like to use it to pull a house I'm gonna move but I won't ask him for it. He told me what he wants for it and I think it's worth more than that. I don't want him to give it away so I'll see what I can come up with for him. He said they have the manual for it. Thanks for the reply Tom.

Hi Steve, There's another board for crawlers and you might get a few more answers there. If it runs decent and was a small crawler with a blade with 80% under carriage, I would think $4500 bottom end and could bring more depending on the area and I'm talking about a crawler that weighs under 10000lbs. Back east the price will be lower than out west. A larger crawler would bring more on the bottom end price up to a point, then there too heavy too haul with a pick-up, then the price drops. Cylinder kits for a 3" bore run about $45 each and about $90 for a 5" bore kit if that helps. If it looks like it's out of the box he might get double of what I tought and depending on the brand. I've been looking for something under 10000lbs and would pay $2500 for anything diesel that ran and had a 50% undercarriage if local in Arizona. Then again I could be all wet!

Thanks Ken,
I didn't realize that board was there. Have this one bookmarked for quick access. I'm sure my ol' bud thanks you too.
Steve
