Thinking about a standby generator for a electric heated rural home. Also need a welder-have none.
Sounds like combining the two would be a good idea. But is it? Any experience on this approach? Would appreciate hearing from some one who has tried it.

Here's my 2 cents, buy a gas welder, and a seperate generator c/w transfer switch. A good Honda say 5Kw would work fine for most homes. If you need more heat try wood or propane.

Hi Iaguy, Your talking about a Lincoln Pipliner or a Miller Big Blue for welding with generator power as a secondary. If you have a heatpump then no problem but if you have electric forced air furance then you will need a dedicated generator for back up power as they draw a bunch of amps. A real problem when your all electric. A used welding machine as described will run you $4k to 5K and a dedicated generator China diesel 17kw about $7k new plus about $1500 for a utility lock out switch not installed. You have to protect your electric utility for back feeding ther line when your running your generator so you don't kill someone from the utility company. You also have to notifiy your electric utility that your using a backup generator and they approve your lockout switch. Doesn't matter if you use your generator or not!!!

I've been thinking about that, being lucky enough to live in the People's Republik of Kalifornia. A Hobart Champion 10K would power a house if you used appliances judiciously. Northern sells these for $2529 including shipping. Anything smaller wouldn't cut it for a whole house but would work for individual circuits. I've seen machines used go for $1500.00 (a Lincoln Weldan 225) so there are reasonably priced machines out there that would work, a diesel would be nice because they get pretty economical to run. We figured electricity would have to top $2.00 a kilowatt hour to break even though, but would be nice for rolling blackouts. If I find something cheap enough, I'll go for it.

Regards, Rick from Paso.
