Wilken vise,80 plus pounds,it is a # 6 and the question what should I give for it? It is in very good condition. It has a jaw opening of approximatly 12" with a base of about 12" it is big. One more question, are the jaw bars available? I might have them regroved if that is possible.

Many are fixed by welding a chunk of file in them. Not profesional looking , but it does work. I'm not up on vise names, but I see alot of cast iron ones that have met their death by mixing with a sledge hammer. It sounds like it must be a steel vise at the prices the guys are estamating. You all are right..it is a Wilton..and the opening is 9" and not 12" I did not have a measure with me when I saw it..it just looked big. It is 22-23" long closed, has the covered screw..it is marked NO 6..made in good old USA.. no cracks or welds..it swivels..it is heavy. He wants to trade for something so no cash involved.

12 inches is an unusualy large opening for a bench vise. What's the jaw width? Is the screw covered? I think I've seen one or two at auctions. Is it old? Does it swivel? Is it made in USA? If so, it could be worth $200+. Jaws may need to be made up if they are worn out. To check the screw and nut, turn it upside down and look for loosness and wear. Most is in the first few inches of opening. Also check for cracks and welds.

Never heard of a Wilken so I an't speak about quality there. However if it's a Wilton then it's a good vise. Like most other companies Wilton has different grade vises. The cheaper grade is the "utility" grade, in which a 6 inch will run you around $200. The next step up is the 6 inch "mechanics" vise and it's in the neighborhood of $300. The better grade Tradesman line has a 6 1/2 inch model that is around $400. Then they have the top of the line "Heavy-Duty Machinist" vises. In that grade a 6" is gonna set you back around $950. These prices are out of a Gainger catalog that's a couple of years old so current prices are most likely gonna be a bit higher. Remember these prices are for Wilton vises. There are some on the market that are in the same range so far as quality and and while you'll pay a premium for them their not quite as expensive as these. If you want a decent guide to the price of a used one, check out Ebay and see what the going rate for a vise is. That ought to give you at least a starting point for negotiating for the one your loking at. I say this because like everything the price dependson the condition and wethe the other person knows what they have. I got a $400 Wilton out of a scrap yard for $20. It didn't look all that bad but the two roll pins that hold the nut in place had gotten sheared and you couldn't open it by turning the handle. Someone had thrown it out and the yard guys had picked it up. They didn't know how to fix it either so they were gonna throw it back in the pile til I saw it. A good cleaning and two rollpins later and I've been using it for nearly 4 years. Good luck in the negoations.

Could this vise be a Wilton? I have not heard of a Wilken but there could be a vise by that name. As far as price 350.00 probably would not be extremely high. Just measure your pocket depth and desire to have it.

If it is a Wilton I feel they make quality tools, I have a some of their "C" clamps and they are very good clamps.

There are replacement jaws out there, try this site- Link
