I recently purchased a small square tool marked no.811 ,it is abput 9 inches long and kind of resembles a file or a rasp. It has two numbers on each of the four faces ranging from 11 to 24,can anyone help me with what this tool might be and what it's used for?Oh,I forgot ,it is about 3/8 inches square.

Very useful tool, I have several thread files to cover the full range of metric and fraction sizes.

Herbrand makes (or made, not sure if they are still in business) decent tools. I think much of what they made was sold to the government. I have a couple of odd wrenches of theirs that I bought from a used tool dealer that comes aound at work. He buys lots of government surplus tools and surplus from aircraft factories and such.

They must have made socket sets as well. I have a couple of sockets I"ve accumulated over the years.

It's a thread file. The numbers are for threads per inch. It is used to repair/straighten dinged or damaged threads. Caz

Sounds like a thread chaser, basically a file for cleaning up bolt threads. The numbers on the faces correspond to the thread series of the bolt, i.e. you'd use the 24 section to clean the threads on a 3/8x 24 bolt, the 11 section for a 5/8 x 11, etc.

The thread chasing files are great things to have.

They're generally placed on an area of undamaged thread and worked toward the damaged part.

By working outward to the end of a bolt, a hexagonal nut type thread chasing nut can finish up the job with both the correct form of threads and maintaining a uniform diameter, with far less chance of cross-threading your repair job.

Great rounding out tool for use with the nut type thread chasers.

Craftsman has a red box of male and female thread chasers, along with the thread files (metric and S.A.E.), for around $49.99.
