OT- hog water heater

Anybody here familiar with the old hog water wick heaters that burned kerosene? I have a galvanized Big Husky 2 hole waterer with the doors in the bottom for a heater. There is a plastic liner inside the tank, and a 1/2" layer of styrofoam between tank and liner. Anybody have a good useable heater they'd be willing to part with? TSC, Fleet Farm, Theisens, and other local stores have the exact same variety of electric heaters that I do not think will work. Thanks.

I don't know how big your waterer is but on the smaller ones we used to get by with just one or two 100 watt light bulbs if the waterer was located out of the wind. Toward the end we had to use rough service bulbs because the store bought ones were cheapened up and wouldn't last. We layed the bulb on a block of wood to keep it dry. We did this for years, but the waterer has to be checked daily. Jim

I'm guessing it at least 50 gallons, give or take. I have a small waterer for little pigs that I have put a heat lamp inside the tank portion to keep thawed, but it was alot smaller and the pigs used it enough to keep it from freezing.Never thought to put the heat lamp under the water on this bigger tank. Seems pretty obvious now. Thanks guys, think the light will work.

I think I have a couple of those heaters here but these I just picked up for antique display, 40 year ago when we started to raise hogs we got a couple of them and junked them inside of 2 months and went to 2 of the red heat lamps in a reflector with a porcaline (SP) socket and just layed them on the bottom of the fountain so each shone on one of the waters and used that settup for years untill we quit hogs

Excellent idea, and obviously it never occurred to me to do that. As long as I can get the reflector through the opening, can't see why it won't work. It is always dry below the trough that runs between the two holes, so I don't see an electrical problem there. Keep it full and they can't move it around. I'll try it. Thanks for the tip.
