Dish washer to Parts washer What cleaner?

Okay I hauled our old dishwasher up out of the basement and out to the shop. Amazingly after 15 years idle it still works.

Intend to use it as a parts washer.

The question is what should I use for detergent? Temptation is dishwashing detergent. Any better ideas? Keep in mind it can't suds up like the water based parts solvents do.

I tried that stuff in my manual parts washer and what a mistake that was. Cleaned the parts ok and seemed easier on the hands but pealed the paint off everything and has pretty well rusted the tools that live there. built up a layer of scum in the tank and won't go through the pump.

Anyway should I just use dishwashing detergent or something else?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys

I tried just dishwashing detergent and it got the lite stuff off but didn't touch the heavier grease. Will try DW tabs and maybe Laundry soap later.

Can't wait to try the dairy CIP stuff but will have to wait till I can find some. Dairies are few and far between in my area.

I will probably start a new thread if I can get this set up to work.

You guys think THIS stuff is good? I fix the big boys known as commercial machines. Big Hobart unit with black specks all over the plates in the morning run. Nurse home all bent out of shape. I'm called in and all is well by lunch time till I pull out the spray arms and filter screens. I find in the bottom a nice big coil spring that looks kind of like its out of a Chevey or a Ford head. You got it kiddies one of the night staff ran his heads through a few times! Ecolab Super Trump and The solid caustic cleaners work REAL good. Smile Jeffcat

The guy that shares my shop with me rigged up an old diswasher to use as a parts washer. We tried several things and finally settled on powdered CIP cleaner used to clean piplines and bulktanks on dairy farms. It's non foaming, breaks down grease like nothing. It will rust stuff under certain conditions. Odly enough the diswasher looks like brand new on the inside, we just hafta clean the fileter frequently. We also put acid(liquid for milkstone in piplines and bulktanks) in the jet dry compartment. It works good.

That sounds like a good cleaner, but would hesitate on the acid unless you know the detergent does not have clorine in it. Clorine and Acid make clorine gas very deadly, if it doesn't kill you will eat your lungs up.

The detergent has chlorine in it. A dishwasher and a my pipeline washer in my parlor both are CIP (clean in place) systems. Jetdry is also an acid. There is enough rinsing between the wash and the acid or rinse cycle, also these systems are closed systems. I understand the acid and alkali principal, but I've been around chlorinated cleaners and acid all of my life and havn't been "burnt" yet.

My milker was a CIP also, I was talking about mixing CIP detergent and acid. I used to mix clorox and acid then get the H out of there. It makes a super cleaner.

You may want to try some of this Equinox product. It is supposed to be an environmentally safe low alkyline cleaner that is three times the strength of regular dishwashing soap. It should work with the seals and pumps in the dishwasher without any damage.

LOL

No wife to get mad here. Dishwasher won't make it back into the house anyway.

Personally I wouldn't attempt this stunt in a dishwasher the was use to wash the plates I eat off of anyway.

Somehow I don't think mineral spirits would work as mentioned earlier. I could see using it in a regular parts washer but I will go back to comercial petroleum based solvent in that rig. That stuff doesn't iritate the skin like some products.

I'd use plain ol'dishwasher tabs and make sure I had nice hot water. Does your's have a drying cycle? Either way, rust will be a concern. I might add some additional filtering material in the bottom to help make the pump last. Knowing the older appliances a bit, I'd bet the old one will outlast your new one even though it'll be doing something it was never designed to do!

Thanks Bret

Yes the washer I am using has a drying cycle. I agree with you that getting things dried off fast will be important.

Going to try my first batch later today. Will post with the initial results.

Thanks

It seems to me that laundry detergent would work well. I have used it for years to remove grease from my hands. It is nonfoaming and removes grease well. I think a brand like Ajax would be best as it seems like it would dechrome a trailer hitch. Let us know what you used and how well it worked. Thanks Aaron
