I purchased a Bridgeport mill with 2 J heads and a hyd tracer attachment.I am wondering if this is more or less valuable than if it were a standard model.Meaning was this sort of a Pre-CNC?
Are there any sites where I could find out a price to ask for this unit?

Al

Our shop had a Bridgeport tracermill when I started work back in 1984 . We were still pretty heavy into textile parts then . It was a good machine in its time , and I made quite a few parts on it myself . As we moved out of the textile type of work and started adding more CNC mills , the tracer gathered dust . We finally sold it a few years ago for just a few thousand dollars . I programmed , setup and operated CNC mills for 5 years before moving into the front office .CNC is so much more versitile and productive than a tracer . On a tracer , you have to do all drilling , tapping , thickness milling and soforth on another machine and then mount your part and pattern to the table . On a CNC , you can do it all .

Don't despair though , a tracer is good for one of a kind parts .

I will give you a little tip I learned . On your roughing cut , slip one of those cardboard end mill tubes over the stylus . This will make the endmill cut oversize and leave finish stock . Take the tube off and make your finish cut .

Good Luck and Enjoy !

Chris

I take it the mill has cranks on the handle & can be used as a conventional mill as well as a tracer? Or can table only be moved under hyd power?

There aren't many people still using these, so there are a lot more machines than there are people looking for them. CNC mills have made them hard to sell. If it works well, and you can find someone who needs it, then do the best you can. I've seen a number of them stripped of everything usable, and left for the next trip the the scrap yard. Aren't you glad you asked?...Al English

Hi al, Try this website as it's similar to this one but for machinery only. Beware there are several dealers that talk there but there info is usally good.
