LP Requlator leaking?

Wife caught a whiff of faint gas smell outside yesterday. Near where the line from the LP tank enters the house. (50+ feet from the tank to the house, one regulator on the tank, one on the outside of the house, tank is about 70% full.)

When I got home to check it, no smell anymore. Had her cycle the furnace to see if starting/stopping the flow of gas would make a difference - didn't notice anything.

My question: Do these regulators "burp" once in a while? I've had the low-pressure regulator fail a couple times in the past, but when it goes out you know it - it really leaks badly. I'm just curious why it would only leak periodically? Is it time for a new one?

My Dad worked for a propane company for over 40 years and I seam to remember a few years ago they had a few guy's just going around changing out the regulators, was some kind of a re-call on some of them, I remember the papers laying on his desk about it, I would give them a call and have them check it out though, I don't remember the make or models that were re-called..

The regulator on the side of the house is the Secondary Regulator. They are designed to open up and relieve themselves in the event of "over pressure" from the primary regulator (tank). This may have been the result. In any aspect, the regulators should be checked by your LP supplier.
Here in MI, it is common, that the tank & regulators are owned by the supplier and it is their responsibility. I personally, am an exception to this, in that I own my tank and regulators. Being a HVAC/R contractor, I think I can handle diagnosing and servicing my equipment...LOL

Seems to me like most women have a somewhat better sense of smell than men.

Since we are dealing with a house supply line and aren't worried about restoration quality regulators I would suggest you call your LP supplier NOW NOT LATER. They will have electronic sniffers that can pick up leaks that you and I can't. Most good supplier's will be out there in short order. Looks like you probably have a good relationship with yours if you aren't bouncing off the bottom of the tank most of the time.

The only place in a LP system that should vent to the air would be the pressure relief valves. Once the gas has gone to vapor there usually aren't any of those. In your system it would go to gas in the tank.

I notice that alot while landscapeing around homes. It wouldnt hurt to get the dishsoap out and check it though. If only for piece of mind.
