Hi- can anyone offer any tips on how to best determine the number of cords in log lenght wood? (meaning the wood is not cut and split yet) I am interested in purchasing wood this way but how do you know what volume you are getting? Any thoughts are appreciated. dave

Perhaps this is not the exact answer to your question but rather a referance. Simple way to imagine a cord is a full size pickup box is 8ft long with tail gate up---It is 4 ft between the fender wells. That is two fo your measurements now you would have to stack it 4ft high. Dave NE IA

using the basic formula for a cylinder, pi*radius of the base squared*length, then a 12inch diameter log 8 feet long will be approx 6.28 cubic ft. Since a cord is 128 cubic ft, then you need 20.38 8ft logs 12inches in diameter.

A cord of wood equals:

# 30 Boston rockers or
# 460,000 personal checks or
# 61,370 No. 10 envelopes or
# 1,200 copies of National Geographic magazine or
# 12 dining room tables that each seat eight people or
# 89,870 sheets of letterhead bond paper or
# 942 one-pound books or
# 1,000 to 2,000 pounds of paper (depending on the process used) or
# 7,500,000 toothpicks or
# 4,384,000 commemorative-size postage stamps or
# the amount of heat equivalent to what is produced by a ton of coal or 200 gallons of fuel oil.

Make a rack from angle iron or 2x4s, 8' long, 4' wide, 4' high.
Cut the wood in 4' (or 8') lengths. When the rack is full, you have a cord.

If you filled your rack with logs, you would be cutting yourself short. Round logs wont take up the same space as split wood since split wood packs tighter than plain logs. In my calculation above, sixteen 12inx8ft logs would fill a 4x4x8 space but calculations show that it will actually take 20 logs to make a cord. Of course that would be perfectly packed wood so in reality it's probably gonna be less.

A cord of wood is a measure, 4'X4'X8'. As someone else said, it's 128 cubic feet. So a stack of wood 4' high by 4' wide by 8' long would be a cord. Sometimes there are approximations of a cord using weight, but those are subject to a lot of interpretation or misinterpretation as the case may be. Variance can occur because of the species of wood, the amount of moisture in the wood, so it's not a very accurate measure of a cord.

Here's a guide if you're out in the woods harvesting trees. Hope this helps. Tree diameter measured at chest height.
4 inch trees--50 trees per cord
6 inch trees--20 trees per cord
8 inch trees--10 trees per cord
10 inch trees--6 trees per cord
12 inch trees--4 trees per cord
14 inch trees--3 trees per cord

Some answers. in reply to diggerdave, 01-19-2006 06:02:36
If you are having it delivered by truck, a cord of hardwood is 5800 pounds, and pine is 5350 pounds. If you are cutting standing timber, it gets a lot more complicated.
