OT: mixing cement to 4500psi

Does anyone here know how to calculate cement mixtures based on the desired strength? I am looking to need the mix for 4500# concrete using 3/4" rock.

I work in a packaging plant (we package dry concrete mix for the do it yourself crowd. Anyway, we routinely send sample bags to the testing lab to test for strength, and 4500 lb. (in 28 days) isn"t all that difficult.
Our mix design is typically 15% cementitious (0r about 12 lbs. cement in an 80# bag). Like the others have said, correct water content, and proper curing will do wonders for overall strength....

May I assume you mean a 4500 lb Portland cement concrete mix Seth? Sorry bout the nit pick, pet peave of mine I guess. It"s not quite as simple as you think. The mix design for "X" strength Portland cement concrete changes with the local aggregate properties, gradation, and moisture content and the properies of the particular portland cement used. Obtaining "X" compressive concrete requires mesured componants not wild guesses, especially water. That being said 4500 lb concrete is not asking very much, it"s just above fill grade or some call it footer mix etc. In other words it is not rocket science to make 4500 or better given quality aggregates AS LONG AS you do not make slop out of it when you mix it. Excessive water, not wrong componants is what ruins the strength of most home brewed concrete. ID say that the old standard 3-2-1 or 3(gravel)2(sand)1 (cement) shovel mix will do what you want just fine as long as you mix concrete, not slopcrete.

That 3-2-1 mix will only give you about a 2000 psi mix.A 4500 psi mix is a strong mix and if he really does need a mix that strong he would be better to go to a ready-mix company as it may require additional additives.
