I have a 1996 Ford F250 PSD, with the auto tranny. I"ve noticed for the past couple weeks, when the truck shifts into overdrive, it gets some vibrations to it. It sort of feels like maybe the fuel isn"t being ignited, or the pump isn"t pushing all the fuel out. Only happens between 45 and 60 mph, and not everytime it shifts into OD, maybe 8 out of 10 times. When I let off the pedal, it smoothes out again. I"ve checked the tranny, proper fluid levels. I plan on getting the trans. flushed this spring, as the truck has 154,000 miles on it. Other than that, the truck runs fine, have no problems in any other gears. Anyone have an idea on what to look at?

When another brought up spark plugs I remembered something I saw. The neighbor does a lot of work in his shop. He was a mech and a service writer. Normal plugs DON"T work in Fords. I would get platinum DOUBLE button plugs. The reason is they use one coil for two plugs and the spark goes the wrong way around. Stop in NAPA and look at the thing on the counter. Also saw it in the neighbors shop with a 96 Ford. Plugs from one bank were normal. Other plugs looked like they were dragged down a cement driveway. Jeffcat

The only good automatic transmission is one that is in someone else's truck. I don't understand why anyone would buy a truck with auto trans but I guess it's hard to find anything else anymore. It seems to me they are inferior to a manual transmission in virtually every way.

I prefer a manual also, but this truck had everything else I was looking for. Allmost impossible to find a 3/4 ton, reg. cab, long box, 4wd, diesel, with manual trans. these days. Figured I could live with an auto, since it had every thing else I wanted. Next one will be a dodge cummins with the 6 speed.

Thanks for all the help guys. When I bought the truck last year, I was told by the dealership that the trans. had been rebuilt by the previous owner. They couldn"t tell me when or at what mileage it was rebuilt. I will look at the throttle position sensor and change the fluids and filter, see if that helps at all. If those don"t make any differance, I"ll take it to someone that knows more about trans. than I do. Couple people said not to flush, just drain the trans. Can someone tell me the reason for this? Thanks again for the help.

Your trans should have a drain for the converter and that along with drop’in the pan will git all but 1 Qt. Of the fluid, The best way. Not all trans have the converter drain so then a flush with the correct equipment izz the modern way to exchange the fluid and git most of it when it has no provision for the converter to be drained.

I agree with Vern. I have a 2001 PS auto tranny.
I pull alot of heavy loads and have had the same thing. Ive gotten where i change the fluid and filter at 15000 now on this truck. I also put the LUCAS tran treatment in each time. I use lucas in fuel, oil, tranny and hydraulics. Its good stuff.
Your converter could be going bad but I would change th fluid and filter drive about 5000 and if it hasnt stopped change it again before dropping the tranny and changing the converter. Its alot cheaper to change it twice than do the other. Im also going to put a link to another forum I found about the PS trucks. I will ahve to post again with it

My 93 S-10 Blazer will do the same thing. If I put it in drive instead of O/D it quits. I recently changed the trans oil.

I don’t know if your engine has individual coils for each spark plug or not. I have a 2000 F150 that exhibited the same symptom as you describe. Found it had a weak coil on one of the cylinders. It would not fire under heavy load when stepping on the gas when converter was locked up. Fired ok under light load.
Go to a place that can check the computer for faults. That will tell you if a cylinder was misfiring and which one.
Much cheaper than transmission work if that happens to be the problem.

Regards
Gary

After re- reading your problem I believe more than ever that it is the throttle position sender. The key is the sounding like loss of fuel or ignition and that is true - you are losing fuel. You said that letting off would clear up also try giving it more gas and see if it also clears up. A bad converter does not clear up. The sender is $25 and a transmission re-build is $$$$$$$$ I just had the same problem with my truck. If you have a VOM, the sender is easy to check and easy to replace on a Ford.

Vern lead ya on the rite track. Its called shutter fells like rumples in the road or a wash board effect. Over drive trans puts a lot of stress on the fluid and the fluid izz worn out. Yours should have the drain in the torque converter so drain it and drop the pan and replace the filter. I would have 15 qt. of fluid on hand it will take around 14 qt .their izz a product called Dr. tranny Instant Shutter Fix that werks Sold by Lube Gard and kin be found at most good parts stores. At 150K you need to service the trans, Its not unusual to see this early in the life of the trans I have had to service the trans @ 12k are less for this problem. This izz “bout all you kin do at this time. This izz a patteren failer and a EZ fix if you do drop the pan and find a plastic plug with a oring in the pan its the plug used to stop up the dip stick hole while build'in the truck instead of pull'in the plug out befor they installed the dip stick tube they just knocked it down in to the pan, it will not hurt a thing and does make a good hole stopper to use when remove'in the trans so remove it and save it, its a free tool.

They may be right about the torque converter but before I went that direction, I would check the throttle position sensor. A bad spot on the sensor at that speed can cause the same symptoms.

Sounds like the torque converter is going bad.it also could be the sensor for the converter.when they go into O/D something locks up in the torque and yours may be slipping

Tom is right on the converter. It sounds like stick - slip (shudder) of the converter clutch. There should be a button on the stalk to disable the converter lock up which makes it run like the old open converters. Try disabling the converter clutch and see if the problem persists. If the problem goes away then it is time for a replacement converter.

One more thing you may want to try is to replace ALL of the transmission fluid. DO NOT DO THE FLUSH THING! Remove the pan and drain the converter and change the fluid. It takes about 13 quarts to do the whole transmission. If the oil has more than 30,000 miles on it it is time for a change. The friction modifiers in the oil that prevent slip-stick or shudder are depleted by the time the oil has 30,000 miles on it. The transmission is an E4OD or Electronic Four Speed Overdrive. A 1996 E4OD uses Mercon oil, NOT MERCON V.

Also replace the transfer case oil at the same time.
