generator help needed

I have a Coleman generator model pm54-4202. I am going to rebuild the engine (B/S) and need information on how the engine is attached to the generator. I removed the generator from the engine but the armature is still attached to the engine. I removed the bolt on the end of the armature but it still will not slide off. Should it slide off the shaft or is it held on some other way.
Thank you, Bill

i had a friend tell that if you take a bolt that screw.s into the back of the armeture and dril a hole through it and put a grease fitting into it you can take a grease gun and push it off the engine shaft

They are right that it is a taper fit. I sprayed some WD-40 and used a big open end wrench that fit over the shaft and knocked with a wood hammer while rotating the shaft some. A puller would be ideal but we don't live in a ideal world.

Careful you do not snag any rotor windings during disassembly or re-assembly. My Father-in-law did on mine. I flashed the generator thinking it was just a loss of residual magnetism. Instead I just powered up the short and we watched a revolving ball of fire inside the generator housing. I did get it working again by unwinding one turn of rotor wire to get some working length. Then drilling and tapping the un-used portion of the slip ring. I soldered the winding to a lug and loc-tited the lug's machine screw. I try to keep in mind that the econo Coleman generators are disposable rather than repairable. The previous owner snapped the rod on mine by running it with the choke on. The gasoline diluted the crankcase oil and allowed the rod to gall and grab the crank. The choke on the Tecumsehs looks like its completely off when its still on.

They are a tapered fit, you will need a puller to remove the armature. If it is an older unit you may need to use some heat also.
Make sure you use alot of anti-seeze when you reassemble it. It will make it alot easier to get apart when you rebuild it the next time.
