I just got off the phone with Safety-Kleen. Seems they have closed the local branch so now I need to deal with the one 90 miles away that on occasion services this area. I have 1 of the small bench top Safety-Kleen parts washers with the 5 gallon plastic tank underneith that I bought off them probably 18 years ago. To get a fresh 5 gallon tank of solvent from them is $89.00 plus tax plus a haz mat fee I'm sure.
Kerosene is still only $2.80 a gallon. I'm sure the guy that takes my waste oil for his furnace would take the dirty (kerosene)solvent. Small wonder Safety-Kleen closed their branch, who can afford to do business with them besides the big shops?

I have always used Graymills Super Agitene, with good results... My local supplier stopped stocking it, & shipping it in would cost almost double... I recently got five gallons of cleaner from Advance Auto, & was not pleased with it.. It does not clean well, & it evaperates much faster than the Graymills solvent did...

90 bucks....what a scam. I would use mineral sprits. That is what I remember a shop using where I worked when I was a kid. 19 years ago.

Not sure about the flash point of naptha(Coleman fuel). It used to be called white gas.

Before you buy the kerosene, try a couple gallons of mineral spirits first.Kerosene will leave a film of oil on your parts whereas mineral spirits won't.Mineral spirits is what automatic transmission shops first used way back when. And mineral spirits will burn in a stove as well as kerosene so disposal is no problem. When I was a kid we used it in lanterns and it burned real well.Had a neighbor who was a painter and bought it by the barrel. His kid and I helped ourselves. He never missed it.lol, bob

The nice thing about kerosene and its oily film is that if you dont get back to your clean parts for a day or two the parts are still clean and they havent started to rust. A quick spray with brake cleaner then the air hose and they are dry and ready for the blast cabinet.
If you use a water based cleaner you cant leave the parts without coating them in oil or they will rust up. The same will happen with a solvent that evaporates and leaves no protection. Every tractor manual we have recommends cleaning parts in kerosene.

Steve, Check with the local Automotive Machine Shop.If they don't use Safety Kleen they usually have a licensed waste people that service their Hot tank ,Spray washer & Parts Solvent. You can get solvent, It is the disposal they will get after you on.Especially if you have been using Safety Kleen & quit. They will turn you in.I don't know where you live, but here in Illinois we have several options.I have been out of the full time shop for a few years.I am not sure who the guys are using right now,but I know its not Saftey Kleen. If you have an industrial chemical supply place, ask thme if they have something you can buy. One of the local pool supply places also sells chemicals, and before Safety Kleen came around, we used naptha from them and it always worked good for us.

Just thought I'd share something that works good for cleaning small parts.. pick up a cheap electric ice cream maker, take the motor assembly from the top and suspend a wire basket (deep fryer?) from the shaft, place it top of a bucket of solvent of choice..the constant slow rotation does a great job on carb parts etc...

Try your local fuel oil supplyer. My neighbor delivers for one and useuall I find a five gallon bucket outside my door every couple of months. Works great. My price is real good but the actual cost isn't that much either

One thing you can do to help clean that old caked on gunk is to make a loop of small tubing drill it full of holes hook it up to air and sink it to the bottom of the parts washer place the parts in the solvent and slowly turn on the air. Use only enough air to agitate the solvent. Close the lid. Use only if your parts washer has a lid.
Drink a cup of coffee or a beer or if your real industrious remove more parts to be cleaned then check the parts in washer repeat as needed. If the parts aren't cleaned after a six pack you may have to break down and scrub a little. You can put in as many parts as you washer will hold.

Scott, I'm afeared that after a six-pak, I wouldn't really care if the parts were clean or not!
So I'm a lightweight what can I say?

When I bought my parts washer, I went looking for some type of solvent to use. A friend of mine works in a tranny shop, and said to use naptha. I bought a 55 gal drum of it and have been using it for the last 8 years. Seems to work o.k. and appears to be safe enough.

The magic number for cleaning solvents is a 140 degree flashpoint, or higher. Big difference in the rules fo the use, storage and handling of the solvent when the flash point is above 140 vs below 140. That is where Safety-Kleen comes in, a legal solvent that works, that meets the rules.

Various Greymills solvents, both water based and solvent based are available cheaper (about $50 or so for the Super Agitene from Grainger in 5 gal. One has lanolin in it, better for the hands, cannot paint parts afterward, other does not have lanolin.

Yeah, I'm aware of the rules, my brother in-law was a branch manager for safety-kleen for almost 30 years until Laidlaw the company that bought them in a hostile take over started their program of driving out all their older managers. The general rule of doing business became "we are number one, If they won't pay our price they can go elsewhere"! many are.
Bad part for me is the nearest Grainger location is a 105 mile round trip, and to ship this stuff UPS or FedEx cost almost as much as the stuff itself or more.
So it's looking like kerosene is about the only cost effective option.

How about Fastenal? There's one in Williamsport and one between Wellsboro and Mansfield? They have dropped things off the regular delivery route at no charge before.

Steve,

I have a 12 gallon Clark parts washer that I bought at my not so local Trinket Supply Co. store. I also bought two 5 gal pails of solvent from them at the same time. I will have to look at the buckets out in the shed to see exactly what it was. As I remember it was about $25 per 5 gal about 2 years ago. The stuff works great and is low odor, but it's not as good as Safety Kleen. I have to scrub the bad stuff pretty good, but I've been happy with it.

Hi Steve,

There's that Laidlaw company name again. Apperently they are a very fast growing company into just about everything. Here, AZ, they have the school bus conntracts for just about every small town in the State.

A guy was saying biodiesel works very well for a parts cleaner solvent. Just repeating what I've hear as I've never used any of it.
