Looked at Drill Doctor models 750x & DD750x. From my reserch , the difference in the two is: the 750x does fractional bits , and the DD750x does fractional , letter , and number bits. At Amazon.com the 750x sells for $119.00 , and the DD750x sells for $209.00. I ended up ordering the DD750x. But , not from Amazon.com. The Drill Doctor store(drilldoctorstore.us) has the DD750x model on sale for $134.95 , with free shipping. I thought you people would like to know. Thanks Again

The 750x is the 750x. DD just stands for drill doctor, and is not used in the description by all retailers.

It's a little late, but here's a good comparison of the various models.

Hi Nolan , I too assumed the "DD" stood for Drill Doctor , and maybe it does. Problem is , I see the 750X , and DD750X advertised by the same retailers. This is why I"m confused. What"s the difference in the two , if there is a difference. Must be something different , the DD750X cost quite a bit more than the 750X.

I have a $50 Drill Dr at work (3/16-1/2"). When I first got it, I was not at all impressed. It just did not cut it on badly dulled bits. The key is that these are SHARPENERS, not grinders.

I decided to get a Starrett drill guage and try my hand at sharpening by hand. Took a couple of days to get good at it, but I managed to re-grind some of those ruined drils. After that, I popped them in the DD and WOW, it puts a razor edge on them. Now I am good enough to hand-sharpen any larger bits that won't fit, and I have the DD to touch up the smaller ones that do. (Under 3/16" is just not worth sharpening to me.)

The trick with the DD is to use it to keep the bit sharp so it doesn't burn up or require an extensive regrinding. If it needs re-grinding, do it on the bench grinder and then hone and true it with the DD.

I also have the "old" style Drill Doctor, basicly the same as the 500. The instructions were a little confusing but I looked at the new ones and they now come with a DVD. You will be very satisfied, it is quick and consistant. Makes split points easy.

The difference can't be just that. Any drill Dr. will take fractional, letters, and number bits. The bit is clamped in a chuck so any bit in the size range of the drill Dr. will fit it. My guess is the difference lies in the construction. Bearings, motor, quality of the chuck, etc. I got one for Xmas a couple years ago. It was the same model number as the one we had at work that was a couple years older. There was quite a difference in the quality of the two . The newer one was what I felt a less quality tool. It does the same job but several things about it are cheaper. They may have gotten complaints and split the model and now have a low and high line of the 750.

Thanks Chris(WA). Never had one before. So all I have to go by is what I've read on line. Hope other drill doctor owners can add thier experiences/input as well.

Even though I think my drill Dr. might be a bit lowline compared to our older one I really like it. Just looked at the website and it looks like they have changed the line since I got mine. I would say mine compares most with the 500. The 750 looks like it has been improved over the one we have at work. If you sharpen a LOT of bits(enought to keep 3+ maintenance guys in drillbits) spend the money. If you just sharpen your personal bits the 500 will make you happy I bet. I know that once you have one and master using it you will never hand sharpen another drill bit!
