I'm thinking about getting an air grease gun but am concerned if they are worth it? I have the hand pump type so do I need the air type, would there be an advantage?

thanks for your help.

David, I picked up a Lincoln cartridge air gun last fall for 80 bucks on sale. Best darn small gun on the market! Have averaged around a case of grease per day and no problems, has enough pressure to blow stubborn fittings free. Have to agree that hanging on to the hose is not the safest but the reality is otherwise. Always make sure you use a high quality PRESSURE GUN HOSE and wear gloves as backup. Dave

I think pneumatic grease guns are great when there is a need for them. However!!! I Almost lost my hand to one a dozen years ago. I was greasing spring hackles on a IHC Semi tractor and got on a plugged one and it took less than a second to blow a hole in the hose and through the palm of my hand between the knuckles and filling up the back of my hand full of grease.
I was lucky a good sergeon saved my hand. If you do use any type of grease gun! keep your hands off the hose.

I have 2 of the inexpensive cartridge type that requires the air supply to be attached to the handle. Both are in the back of the cabinet because of poor or no performance. I have seen the type VaTom describes, and that is what I was looking for with out the expense..... .wrong again.

John pretty well covered the territory. I happened into a gun that has wheels and holds a five gallon bucket of grease. Automotive garage was getting rid of it as they don't do much greasing anymore.

I run tractors and found that my little backhoe has as many fittings as a big one. What I use for a pickup has 30 zerks on it. A 28' hydraulic hose on the thing lets me grease with it still in the shop and the tractor outside.

I used to spend a lot of time refilling the gun. This thing is great! Grainger gets 600 bucks for one of these puppies but if you have the need and can find one, a tenth that price'll probably do you. I got the hose on ebay from a guy who sells them all the time. And it'll shoot grease across the shop-keeps the help awake.

David, I'd get one if: I only had one usable hand. Had lots of old style machinery with dozens of zerks. Like gadgets. Need to pump large volumes of grease into something. Other than these, the hand pump kind of done me well.

We had a nice expensive one for the shop and a cheap one for working on the road in a nice city where nothing that could be locked in the service truck would be stolen. Both worked good. but both also ha d a flaw some times idt didnt put the grease in the air made it feel like it was. on most things it was quicker to use the old hand type than to fool with air hoses. About the only time i drug one out was to grease the Terexes Then found a good use for them was to target practice on the forklift jockey that punched a hole in my portable welder.
