vise advice....need a vise to abuse.

Im in the market for a bench vise to mount to a I bean bedded in cement. No doubt it will be abused. I noticed the wiltons sold at HD are guarenteed for life. I have a nice 4" Prentiss Bulldog on my bench, but cant bring myself to subject a smaller 100yr old gem to that. So, should I spend $300 on a good used REAL Wilton, or get the 6" Home deopt wilton and hope for the best, but get it warrantied when it breaks. ANyone have a big old USA vice to sell in the southeast?

I'll never buy anything with the Wilton name on it again. I got a royal screwing when I bought a "Wilton" 20" drill press this summer. It is identical in every way to a HF version that is $500 less, but the HF has a better fit and finish. It's painted white instead of red.

Wilton is now owned by the same company that owns Jet and Powermatic, neither of which will I buy as well. I have also heard that even the $700 vises are cast in China. No thanks. I was all set to break out $700 for their top line 6" vise when I got that drill press in. I bought an old used American made Hollands off Ebay instead.

If you buy the HD Wilton vise, you might as well just go to HF and buy their identical vise. You'll probably pay a lot less for it and you get the same warranty.

I have the little 5" Hollands that I use for proper vise work. For beating, heating, welding etc... I have a HF 6" radial vise I paid $50 or $80 for. It's about 1/3 iron, 1/3 sand and 1/3 bondo, but I don't feel bad at all about abusing it and it has held up well so far.

Look for a Blacksmith's Post Vise. This thing mounts to a workbench, with a metal leg extending all the way to the floor.
You can beat the living .... without damaging either it our your workbench suffering.
All the impact force is transmitted, nicely, to the shop floor.
A bonus feature is that with most of the energy going into the floor and not your workbench, any tools mounted behind the workbench won't try to jump off-of or out-of their holders and off the workbench.
eBay has these things for sale all of the time. Due to their weight, you really want to find a seller close to you though.

We bought a big Wilton vise for the shop, 8 or so years ago, & I think it was really overpriced... Not a bad vice, no problems with it, but it does not seem to be in the same class , as the old vises... Last year, I picked up 2 post vises that came out of an old blacksmith shop, but I have not set them up yet... Those are some tough old vises...

For holding work I have a Craftsman 4". For beatin on, I have a six inch piece of railroad track. I found it by the tracks after repairs were completed due to a derailmant. Works great as an anvil.

I bought a Snap-on (Wilton) vise and am happy with it. It took me a while to pay it off but if I ever break it I will have a new one in my shop the following week. If you ever find some old-time vise, you will also be happy.

I could never bring myself to spend the needed funds for a good vise (wilton). So I used some auction ones and some el chepo ones . Some are better than others. Main one I use now busted but I brazed it back up and it still takes a beatin. I finally stumbled onto a huge 6" Wilton at a very good price so I bought it. I haven't used it yet as now I need a heavier bench or stand to mount it on. LOL

Sometimes a guy can get lucky at a salvage yard, if you have some around. Old fashioned salvage yards are getting scarce around here. Many (like 50) years ago our neigbor came ove to tell us what he saw a a salvage yard. About 2 dozen railroad vises. We picked one out for $5 (yes five). Took it home cleaned it up, etc. Then I carried across the yard to the grainary and put it on the scale. 203#. Wow! Then I got the wheel barrow to haul it back to the shop, as it was then too heavy to carry. LOL When my Dad retired I got hold of it.It was definately the find of a lifetime.

I beleive that may be what I have in the storage area of my shop here in IND. It was there before me and can stay there unless someone wants it. Just guessing the handle on it is 16" or so. Looks to me like something Wiley Coyotye could use on the Road Runner! Richard

I too have been looking for a good vice, had a cheap farm store brand that I busted. They all seem to sell high at auctions that I attend. I hate to say it but I ended up buying a hvy craftsman and am very happy with it...Jim

Well Old, Im kind of agree with you. But I know I will be hooking the truck up to it or beating on it with a sledge once in a while. If the Bulldog was bigger Id use it for that. Its more a size issue. I am pratty sure I would break any 4" vise in time attached to a rig like that.

The vise I use the most is a 6 inch one on my bench, then it would be an old anvle vise that I use all around the place. I just drop it on the gorund and use the anvil part of it more then the vise. If it was in real good shape I wouldn't use it at all either because of how old it is, but since its broken I use it and abuse it.

The walton is the cadilac of vices at one time i did soe I H repair work for and oliver dealer that had traded for some well used farmalls and wanted them fixed as his machanics did not know or want to fix the T/A's and he had them on the work benches and they put my old Columbia vices to shame i was going to buy a 6 and a 10 inch till i saw the price. But i am cheep but the day ever comes that i have a spare 6 or 700 bucks that is the vice i will buy.

To me a vise is a vise and its going to get hit beat on etc. I have never payed more then $25 for any of them I have, probably 5 plus of them and they all get used and abuse other then one of them and it will probably never get used for much any more. Why because its about 100 years old or older.

For what it's worth. I bought a fairly good sized bench vise at a farm auction a few years ago. The vise showed signs of being used extensively, but seemed to be in very good shape. I placed my bid, and only had to bid one more time and the vise was mine. I thought it rather strange that I got it that cheap, about $15 if I remember right. Got it home and started looking it over real good, and found the "made in china" logo. O.K., now I know why it was so cheap, but I have never regreted buying this vise, it works very well, I have abused it, and it just comes back for more.
